Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

In order to improve the manuscript quality, my suggestions and comments are shown below-

1. The representation of Figure 2 should be in an attractive view

rather than it is in the present form.

2.  The abstract and conclusion need to be concise.

3. The representations of Figure 5 and Figure 7 need to be improved.

4. If possible include the novelty of the work before the conclusion section.

Overall, this manuscript is interesting and described well with scientific aspects. It is suggests the minor revision to address all above-mentioned comments.

The quality of English used in the manuscript is good as per the journal and some minor corrections but overall satisfied.

Reviewer 2 Report

The conducted work “Evolution law of acoustic-thermal effect of freeze-thaw sand-stone failure based on the coupling of multivariate monitoring information” is good. However, following comments should be addressed to further improve the paper:

A. GENERAL COMMENTS ON PAPER

  1. Explicitly mention the novelty and research significance of current work in last paragraph of introduction section with emphasis on scientific soundness. Also, it would be great to add recent relevant literature review from 2023 papers in introduction section as there is no paper cited from 2023.
  2. Avoid paragraph of few (1-4) sentences throughout the manuscript, particularly in results and discussions sections, e.g. lines 180-185, 235-237, etc.
  3. “Mpa” should be “MPa” throughout the manuscript.
  4. Texts within figures must be readable. Text in figures 3 to 7 should be enlarged for easy reading.
  5. Results are very briefly explained/elaborated in a descriptive way, thus results in current form look like a project report. Results should be further elaborated with scientific reasoning.
  6. A separate brief section (explaining the relevance of this research for practical implementation) may be added before conclusion section.
  7. Conclusions are little long; these should be to the point as obtained from results with scientific soundness. Closing remarks should be added at the end of conclusion section keeping in mind all conclusive bullet points.
  8. English Language should be improved throughout the manuscript.

B. SPECIFIC COMMENTS FOR IMPROVING FOCUSSED RESEARCH

  1. On which basis, number and intervals of freeze-thaw cycles are selected?
  2. The sequence reported in conclusion points (2) i.e. lower to higher cycles and in (3) i.e. higher to lower cycles is obvious. It would be great to report the values at particular cycles.
  1. English Language should be improved throughout the manuscript.

Reviewer 4 Report

The authors carried out the experiment of uniaxial compression acoustic emission-thermal infrared real-time multivariate information monitoring for sandstone under different freeze-thaw cycles. The spatial and temporal evolution law of freeze-thaw sandstone failure was analyzed, and the failure precursor information and damage evolution process of freeze-thaw sandstone under uniaxial compression were discussed. The non-contact rock fracture precursor warning index based on thermal infrared was proposed, and the thermal-acoustic precursor information chain of freeze-thaw rock was established. The work carried out by the authors is very important for evaluating the stability of rock engineering in cold regions. The manuscript provides a scientific basis for the design and construction of rock engineering in the cold area. Thus, this paper addresses an important topic, the analysis is rather comprehensive and has practical implications. Correspondingly, the reviewer suggest to accept the paper for publication after the following minor issues are addressed:

(1)The author has conducted an investigation and analysis of the current research progress on rock failure and instability, but there is insufficient analysis of the current status of acoustic emission research. It is recommended to add research results related to rock acoustic emission.

(2)It is difficult to capture the moment when t=1 starts loading in Table 1. According to the article's description, the author campture a 3D image before starting loading. It is recommended that the author change it to t=0

(3)The expression 'micro damage stage' in the text is not accurate enough. Based on the acoustic emission experimental results and the K-value performance time curve of free shape sandstone in the manuscript, this stage should include damage closure and damage propagation, and as the load increases, the small damage undergoes multiple repeated processes from closure to propagation.

(4)The figure in the article is a bit small and not clear enough, such as Figure 1. The experimental equipment used during the experiment is not clear to see. It is recommended that the author increase it. Other figures in the manuscript also need to be further modified.

Reviewer 5 Report

The article is well-established and includes good contributions, The only thing that should be considered is the abstract. it should be revised and summarized to include an introduction, the main question of the research, and the most important conclusion.

There are some English grammar problems, and proofreading is suggested

1.      Revise Figure 1 and show in “zoom in” the targeted area.

2.      A few recent paper can help the authors to enrich their literature and results discussion section
