Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

Thanks to the authors for providing this study

This study provides information on: “Plant composition and species use in agroforestry homegardens in the Eastern Amazon, Brazil”. Please answer the following comments:

General comments:

The study apparently included an enumeration and classification of the existing plants species and an inventory of their domestic use.

The goal of the research is not clear, and it was not achieved through the results, and it was not mentioned that it was achieved in the conclusion until it was not fully mentioned in it. Especially about support initiatives by society and government policies aimed at strengthening the management of natural resources and individual and collective well-being in the region.

Note: It would have been better to add the line numbering feature for ease of commenting and indicating the place of commenting.

In Abstract:

Abbreviation of the abstract so that it does not exceed the word limit allowed in the journal’s formatting requirements (about 200 words).

In Introduction:

·       The introduction should be strengthened further on government policies towards home gardening as well as on the uses of garden plants and the development of home garden models in the study area.

In Material and Methods:

·       If there are local government directions to organize such home gardens, it is better to mention them in the research (for example, determining the proportion of the garden compared to the area of the house, determining the plants types allowed to be cultivated and the types prohibited, and the presence of control or vital control by the municipalities in order to ensure that there is no outbreak of plant diseases or Insect spread...etc.)

·       Add a separate paragraph that includes the statistical analysis mentioned in the last lines of materials and methods section. This means separating it from the Data collection paragraph.

In Results:

·       It should be noted that the results mentioned on pages 4 and 5 relate to figure 1.

·       Reformatting Figures to show the lines of the axes for ease of reading.

·       It is important to include a subtitle for the results listed on page 4-8 of the results.

·       Modify the title of Paragraph 3 of the Results to Results and Discussion. Although it is better to separate the discussion paragraph from the results.

·       Where are the results and discussion that achieve one of the objectives of the study? which is: support initiatives by society and government policies aimed at strengthening the management of natural resources and individual and collective well-being in the region.

In Conclusions:

The conclusion must be rewritten so that it includes the most important results that have been reached that achieve the goal of conducting the research, and this is not found in the current conclusion in the manuscript.

This is a well written research article but I have several suggestions that may improve this manuscript:

Under section 2.2 Area of study-please elaborate why this mess region and why these municipalities were were chosen for the study. Also a location map is needed in this section.

Section 3.3 Data & Aanlysis- did the authors have any problems obtaining "verbal consent" from study subjects? Could this bias the study sample.

There is no discussion section in this manuscript. Results sections 3.1 and 3.5 could go into the new discussion. Also are there any other studies that would be affected by this study's results.

in the conclusion section - need a brief statement of study limitations which should generate future research needed. Also are these results generalizable to the Eastern Amazon or other similar greographic areas?

English usage is fine-just a few minor English usage issues.

The paper studied the agroforestry gardens in Brazil in urban context by collecting quantative data from survey targets. The topic is of significant interest and brings diversity to urban sustainability studies. The results are compelling and the content is presented well. It is recommended publish after some minor structure realignments.

It is suggested to add subsection title for the first part of section three as 'general patterns' and create a discussion section by separating 3.5.

Author Response

Point 1: It is suggested to add subsection title for the first part of section three as 'general patterns' and create a discussion section by separating 3.5.

Response 1: In session 3, a new subtitle 'General Standards' was added at the beginning of section 3.1. A separate discussion section has been created, specifically for item 3.5, providing a dedicated space to delve into its details and implications.
