Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

Very good in my own opinion. It sheds considerate insight on the subject selected. Has potential for informing similar studies elsewhere.

1.What is the main question addressed by the research?    The main focus was on social quality as it interacts with other variables in the chosen context.
2. Do you consider the topic original or relevant in the field? Does it address a specific gap in the field?    To a very great extent, yes. The topic is relevant in the field not just in China but in most developing contexts.  The author chose a specific gap to which he or she applied the relevant data.   3. What does it add to the subject area compared with other published material?   It enriched the pool of knowledge of what we already know about social quality in addition to bringing in the Asian contexts in convincing and subtle ways.
4. What specific improvements should the authors consider regarding the methodology? What further controls should be considered?   The methodology was tight enough especially because it was based on relevant theoretical frameworks. I found the literature review in this section to be exceptionally good.
5. Are the conclusions consistent with the evidence and arguments presented and do they address the main question posed?   The conclusions resonated with the research hypotheses, theoretical framework, design, data and interpretation of results. The results were fleshed out in a professional manner.
6. Are the references appropriate?   The references used were appropriate. Elsewhere, I had recommended that the authors should update some of the fairly aged ones.  The field has received a bit of more recent literature that can enrich what has been presented in this paper.
7. Please include any additional comments on the tables and figures.   The tables and for figures reflected the nature of data gathered.   Finally, I hope that these comments are useful to you in some ways.

The language is accurate and acceptable.

Reviewer 2 Report

I found the paper of great interest because it is necessary to consider human well-being from a holistic perspective rather that from economic factors only. Generally, the study seems well executed!

However, can we consider the study as an essay? I think this an article. Is the use of Roman numerals the journal's standard?

In addition, the author(s) needs to edit the manuscript. For example, lines 59-61, and line 151.

Particularly, line 403. Or the section labeled Conclusion and Discussion ought to be Discussion and Conclusions. The section may need complete review. I think the discussion should be done before the conclusion.

The English seems okay!
