Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

I thoroughly read the paper entitled “Limits and Possibilities of Vegetable Extraction in Extractive Reserves in the Amazon”. The topic is interesting, and I believe that this paper will add more information to the existing stock of literature. Beside that I have some suggestions which will add more charm to the readers of this paper.

1.     The introduction section is too weak. Also please add the novelty of the paper at the end of introduction.

2.     Please enlarge the abstract by adding the methodology and policy recommendations.

3.     Please briefly explain why authors uses this methodology?

4.     The conclusion section is not well written by adding some policy recommendations.

5.     Add study limitations and future direction just after conclusion section

The suggestions of evaluator 1 were answered, as follows. (1) The novelty was included at the end of the introduction. (2) The abstract was expanded with an increase in the methodology and recommendations. (3) The chosen methodology is explained in the second block (2.2 Study Delineation) of section 2. Material and Methods. (4 and 5) We created a section called recommendations, separated from the findings, and reported future studies.

Reviewer 2 Report

This paper evaluates whether the supply of extractive products transformed into economic value can ensure the livelihood of families and contain deforestation. Findings show that low returns, low productivity of land, and lack of labor point to the economic infeasibility of vegetable extraction in the extractive reserves Alto Juruá, Rio Ouro, and Rio Cajari.

The overall idea of the paper is clear and the design is reasonable. I don’t have problems of the context, but I would like the author improves this paper as follows:

         i.            Bars in the paper should be labeled with corresponding data.

ii.            The layout of the figures needs to be improved to make it more readable and visual.

Author Response

All the figures were reorganized in order to meet the suggestions pointed out by the evaluator.

Reviewer 3 Report

The paper presents an interesting but seldom studied topic. It shows the limitations of extravism which in context of Amazon forests destruction should be tackled by supportive policies. It should be seen as a call for action not only to politicians but also green activists all over the world as the problem is not limited to Amazon forest.

I have only minor style remarks. Otherwise the paper is ready for publishing.
