Research Hotspots and Future Trends in Canal-Related Industrial Buildings
Round 1
Reviewer 1 Report
Comments and Suggestions for AuthorsThere are only 96 articles related to canal industrial architecture, indicating that this field of study is not widely researched.
It is suggested that Chinese literature on canals and industrial architecture should also be included in the analysis, and whether the 96 articles in English literature are from high-ranking journals.
It is suggested that the canal and industrial architecture can be divided into different stages.
L250-254,“we found that the top ten institutions have a close association with canals themselves.”The number of publications from each institution should be shown to demonstrate their significance.
In Fig.1, it is shown that there are four institutions in China. However, the number of related papers published by these institutions is not included.
References need to supplement in the revised vision. Each reference in the References section should be double-checked to ensure that it is correct.

Comments and Suggestions for AuthorsThe authors have not clearly presented the essence and importance of the problem of canal-related industrial buildings.
Moreover, from the relatively small number of publications (96 publications for 27 years), citations, and authors, one can conclude that the topic addressed is of a local nature (dimension) and has attracted relatively little attention from researchers worldwide. It is not yet ripe for a broad global presentation, although the authors (motivated by the desire to publish in a global journal) try to give it a global dimension and importance by force. Such a small number of publications and only English-language publications (excluding national languages) - although the problem has a local specificity - does not entitle the authors to formulate conclusions regarding both existing and future trends in the analyzed problem.
Furthermore, there is considerable controversy about the scientific value of the bibliometric analysis presented. It may add minimal new value, but this is far too little for a global journal with a high Impact Factor. It is therefore proposed to attempt to publish this research in a journal with a lower Impact Factor more appropriate to the research presented.

Comments and Suggestions for AuthorsThe manuscript entitled “Research Hotspots and Future Trends in Canal-Related Industrial Buildings” presents a brilliant literature review of all scientific research papers written in English and published in journals listed in the Web of Science between 1997 and early 2024 related to the topic of industrial buildings related to canals.
The summary provided is very correct. It adequately explains what the reader will find, perhaps too extensively, but without generating unrealistic expectations. The introduction, however, is considered scarce. The subject matter is introduced too abruptly, without sufficiently justifying its relevance and why the reader should be interested in reading the entire proposed manuscript. The relevance of mobility and transportation and all its representations and materializations on the current territory and culture has recently been brilliantly addressed by Juhani Pallasmaa:
Pallasmaa, Juhani. 2023. “Existential Homelessness. Placeless and Nostalgia in the Age of Mobility”. ANUARI d’Arquitectura I Societat, no. 3 (November):16-43. https://doi.org/10.4995/anuari.2023.20471.
When addressing the importance of waterways in the distribution of population and activities throughout the territory, these two works are noteworthy:
Casadei, C. (2022) The Inner Areas Italian question. The territory of Southern Inner Etruria along the via Clodia, ANUARI d’Arquitectura i Societat research journal (2), 134-166. ISSN: 2792-7601. https://doi.org/10.4995/anuari.2022.17945
Tognon, A., & Bovati, M. (2022). Between abandonment and resilient thrusts in the territorial mountains of Orobie (Bergamo). ANUARI d’Arquitectura i Societat research journal, (2), 86-110. ISSN: 2792-7601. https://doi.org/10.4995/anuari.2022.18704
It is also important during the introduction to comment on the cultural aspects linked to the enhancement of recent heritage. Regarding identity issues, the following work is interesting:
Santa-María-de-Andrés, I.C., & Cabrera-i-Fausto, I. (2021). El frontón Beti Jai de Madrid y su estructura. Tecnología, Diseño e Innovación, (7), 18-30. https://www.unae.edu.py/ojs/index.php/facat/article/view/333
And with regard to the careful use of heritage meanings in urban and natural contexts, the introduction of the following manuscript is essential:
Cabrera-i-Fausto, I., Fenollosa-Forner, E., & Serrano-Lanzarote, B. (2020). The new entrance to the Camí d’Onda Air-raid Shelter in the historic center of Borriana, Spain. TECHNE - Journal of Technology for Architecture and Environment, (19), 290-297. https://doi.org/10.13128/techne-7790
Enriching the approach to the subject matter in the introduction will undoubtedly make the reading of the manuscript more enjoyable. This is essential since, once the introductory chapter is closed, the following chapters are an analysis that could occasionally become a bit monotonous. However, it is worth noting the author's constant attempt to illustrate each piece of information with comments based on concrete examples.
Regarding the specific content of the data analysis offered, it is only recommended that the value that the text gives to papers written by more than one author be put in a certain perspective since, when they are from the same institution, co-authorship does not necessarily guarantee that there is more than one scientist studying the same question.
