Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The manuscript investigates agronomic traits and glucosinolate content variation between mustard germplasms across locations.  The topic is interesting to the oilseed breeding industry. The topic will contribute to the current canola breeding literature, and I recommend minor revision. Below, I provide specific details.

Minor comments:

Abstract:

Line 18: Change the phrase “gathered” with “collected” or “obtained”.

Line 19-20: what do you mean by “different mustard resources”? Replace with appropriate phrases.

Line 22: what do you mean by “no obvious relationship between them”?

Introduction:

Please clearly state the objective of the study in the introduction.

Line 45-46: Please re-phrase this sentence “harsh environments in the future”.

Line 67,75, and 80: redundant sentences. You’ve already introduced this at the beginning.

Line 3 and 82-83: avoid copy-pasting sentences between or within sections.

Material and Methods

The lab procedure and flow are straightforward.

Line 147: replace “software” with “Microsoft Excel”.

Line 151: Explain how the number of clusters is defined.

Results

Table 4. In the last column (CV%), remove the “%” from each value, its already indicated on CV e.g: 11.24, etc

Line 205: replace the word “established” with “drawn” or a similar phrase.

Line 260: replace the word “organ” with “parts” or a similar phrase.

Figure 9. the colour key doesn’t match the actual value. Please make changes to the figure will be more informative.

i)               Change the x-axis label angle from 45 degree (the default) to 90 degrees.

ii)              The colour choice is not colour-blind friendly; Please reverse rev() the colour gradient from all red to non-red.

Discussion and conclusion

Avoid redundant sentences across sections.

Reviewer 2 Report

Great work! the manuscript is nicely organized. I noted one concern in Table 5 as mentioned below.

Suggestions:

Results: Table 5 – I would suggest Maximum, minimum, and % in each category (% presence of leaf bristles and % absence of leaf bristles) which make sense for qualitative data than mean, etc.

Figure 2: y-axis title should include the organ/ whole plant (in the mature mustard leaves, as mentioned in lines 173-174). Please include the organ for figures 3 and 4, and figure 6. It is essential as this study measured glucosinolates in different types of organs.

Line 27: explain DW in line 27

Line 61: explain "themselves"

Line 88: what do you mean by "intelligent greenhouse"?

Line 173: please replace "In these studies" with "in this study"

Table 4: leave a space "length (mm)"
