Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The manuscript “Tissue-specific recovery capability of aroma biosynthesis in 'Golden Delicious' apple fruit after low oxygen storage” in well-written. Overall the authors brought novel information about the aroma biosynthesis in GD apple after storage under low-oxygen conditions. Indeed, results pointed to main pathways which might be under control. Nonetheless, further analysis must be carried to answer the questions raised by the present data. The subject is scientifically relevant and brings novelty about genes related to production of ethylene and aroma in apples in response to oxygen. Minor questions should be addressed before it be suitable for publication: in material and methods, the authors should improve description of qRT-PCR analysis including chosen of genes; in discussion: the authors should add a figure summarizing genes regulated and the processes modulated by them.  Material and methods: please clarify genes chosen for qRT-PCR analysis. Discussion: The authors should add a figure summarizing genes regulated and the processes modulated by them.

Author Response

Point 1: Material and methods: please clarify genes chosen for qRT-PCR analysis.

  • Now we have added the information to RT-qPCR analysis. (Line 144-148)

Point 2: Discussion: The authors should add a figure summarizing genes regulated and the processes modulated by them.

  • Thanks for your great suggestion. We have added Figure 6 to summarizing gene regulation. (Line 368-369)

Reviewer 2 Report

Overall, I believe this is a very good and high-quality manuscript. The novelty and aim of the study are clear, the English style is good, the methods used are exhaustive and the conclusions are supported by the results.

I only have a few minor suggestions:

- Keywords should be arranged alphabetically. Moreover, please do not repeat words from the title.

- In the Introduction section, I suggest providing more information on the importance of the apple in the human diet and its economical value.

- Names of genera should be written in italics (line 366).

- Please, follow the MDPI formatting style in the References list.

After incorporating all the changes, the manuscript can be accepted for publication.

Author Response

Point 1: Keywords should be arranged alphabetically. Moreover, please do not repeat words from the title.

  • Now we have arranged ‘Keywords’ alphabetically and replaced some word to avoid repeating the words from the title. (Line 24-25)

Point 2: In the Introduction section, I suggest providing more information on the importance of the apple in the human diet and its economical value.

  • Thank you for your kind suggestions. We have added the information in the Introduction section. (Line 66-67)

Point 3: Names of genera should be written in italics (line 366).

  • The names of genera have been changed to in italics. (Line 385 and Line 509)

Point 4: Please, follow the MDPI formatting style in the References list.

  • We have checked and corrected the formatting style of references list.

Reviewer 3 Report

1. Conclusions should be presented in numbered abstracts.

2. Numerical values of the results of the study should be given in the conclusions.

3. In addition to indicating the equipment, it was worth bringing whether it is certified.

Author Response

Point 1: Conclusions should be presented in numbered abstracts.

  • Thank you for your suggestion. Now we have numbered our arguments in Conclusions. (Line 390-402)

Point 2: Numerical values of the results of the study should be given in the conclusions.

  • Thank you for your comment. We have showed some numerical values of key results in Conclusions section. (Line 395-396)

Point 3: In addition to indicating the equipment, it was worth bringing whether it is certified.

  • All the equipment used in our study are commercially available, and they were installed and debugged by technicians from the respective manufacturers. In addition, we have noted the equipment with their model and manufacturer in our paper.
