Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The article discusses a particularly topical issue from an ecological point of view - the search for natural phytotoxins and the possibility of developing bioherbicides. Current topics, clear research methodology, very rich literature review. The results obtained are important for the development of biological control of weeds.

The authors did a great job of identifying natural compounds with herbicidal properties.

Line 35 , if you are using paddy for the crop and rice for the grain use it uniformly.

Line 59, it is better to mention CYP450s and GSTs as enzymes rather than detoxifiers as the enzymes are involved in several other functions, some of the enzymes detoxifying herbicides also can activate some herbicides.

Please mention key grass weeds in the rice ecosystem why just ECHCG? Weeds like Cynodon dactylon and Eleusine indica are major grass weeds in the Indian rice ecosystem.

Adding invitro and invivo inhibition results would add much value to the work.

Reviewer 3 Report

This is a detailed study to determine potential novel herbicides. The abstract could have been a little more informative in terms of what was done and the key findings. It should be able to be a standalone document and at this stage there is good background information but not a lot about the research itself. The introduction provided relevant background information regarding the study. The methods were clear and the results well presented, however sometimes I felt like there was some methodology embedded in the results that might have been able to be located in the methodology section. Throughout the document there are areas where sentence structure could be improved to make the manuscript read and flow a little better.
