Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The research presented is novel and interesting, due to the level of papaya production worldwide, although the virus found is regional, however, during export it could spread and it is important to have a knowledge of its behavior to prevent other plants from getting sick.
The authors present the results in an adequate way and they are important for papaya production in India and nearby regions.

On the other hand, the manuscript can be improved in the introduction and extensive revision of English grammar.

Manuscript Title: Identification of novel begomoviruses associated with leaf curl

disease of papaya (Carica papaya L.) in India

The present manuscript “Identification of novel begomoviruses associated with leaf curl disease of papaya (Carica papaya L.) in India”, has determined the prevalence of disease, characterization, diversity, recombination and evolutionary relationship of begomoviruses infecting papaya in Karnataka State, India. And the documentation of different viruses and their strains of viruses present in a particular area provided important information for strategies to contain the leaf curl disease of papaya. Indeed, the study fits within the scope of the Journal and will also contribute to the existing scientific database. However, the authors should address the minor revisions raised during the review process stated below.

The following specific comments are observed:

1.     In the manuscript, there are still some grammatical mistakes, which need to be corrected. Authors can take help from an expert for the same.

2.     In the Discussion, as a whole, there is little focus on the theme of this study and little explanation and comparison of the key results to other references. The parts should be improved the internal logic and further highlight the new findings in this study.

3.     Line 149: The “is” should be revised as “was”.

4.     Line 151: The “of” should be deleted from the manuscript.

5.     Line 152: The “infected” should be changed as “Infected”.

6.     Line 155: The “and” should be added in front of “petiole bending”.

7.     The details of the article should also be checked. For example, there should be spaces between the numbers and the parentheses.

8.     If possibly give a separate section for "Quality Control” to provide more details for explaining how to conduct the quality control. 9.     The “conclusions” should be revised as “conclusion”.
