Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The authors have study macroinvertebrate communities in a lake of an inter-basin water transfer project and its implications for sustainable management. Although the application is interesting, I think the following concerns and comments need to be addressed:

  1. The novelty of this work should be properly justified in the manuscript. Too many figures are presented in the result section, but I don’t find any discussion on comparison of water resources of project areas.
  2. The authors should explain the changes of ecological water requirements of complex ecosystems in the introduction.
  3. Relationship between assemblages and environmental variables should contains more parameters.

Reviewer 2 Report

The study analyses the effect of environmental changes on aquatic bentic freshwater communities in China and forms a starting point for quality assessment before a large water transfer project in China. This type of study is very relevant for the scientific community and for policy. The paper is well written and is good to follow, also for non biologists.

I have a few suggestions for improvement.

  • there are some minor language errors.
  • please explain what macroinvertebrates and bentic communities are.
  • Caption Table 1. Here you give the method, please mention what we see. And explain the abbreviations.
  • The authors mention the importance of environmental factors on the bentic communities. They explain the importance of, for example pollution, on these communities. This is all very relevant. However, the paper addresses water transfer projects and their effect on water ecosystems. I understand that in order to find out this effect a study before the IBWI project is needed, but factors that might influence the impact are hardly addressed. For example, what about plant or animal invasions of new species in the surface waters in northern China?
  • The abstract is far too long and the conclusions are really too short.
