Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

This work presents an interesting approach to cope with climate change and reservoir reliability. The paper is well written and worth publishing in WATER.

I have, however, some suggestions:

1) The title is quite general “Reservoir Reliability as Affected by Climate Change and Strategies for Adaptation”. However, the novelties of the work are not clear to me. Following the introduction, this work seems more related to the application of rehabilitation strategies to cope with “water demand” in a regional climate change scenario. Does this work present a new methodology?. Could thus the author better specify either methodology novelties or regional peculiarity of the study?

2) Line 28: please add, if deemed appropriate, the following reference: “Short-term hydropower optimization driven by innovative time-adapting econometric models. Applied Energy, 2022” and “effective three-stage hybrid optimization method for source-network-load power generation of cascade hydropower reservoirs serving multiple interconnected power grids, Journal of Cleaner Production, 2019”.

3)Line 33: please add, if deemed appropriate, the following reference “Detailed simulation of storage hydropower systems in large Alpine watersheds, JOH, 2021” and “Impact of the quality of hydrological forecasts on the management and revenue of hydroelectric reservoirs – a conceptual approach, HESS, 2021.”

4)Line 134: I think that “Where” should not have the capitol letter.

5)Line 161: “tine”?

6)Could the authors provide a table with the different “Reservoir Adaptation Measures” described in section 2.6?

Please check carefully the indentation of the phrases as well as the usage of capital letters throughout the paper.

Comment 1) The title is quite general “Reservoir Reliability as Affected by Climate Change and Strategies for Adaptation”. However, the novelties of the work are not clear to me. Reply: Justification of the novelty of the method included (Lines 85-100 of the revised manuscript)

Comment 2) Line 28: please add, if deemed appropriate, the following reference: “Short-term hydropower optimization driven by innovative time-adapting econometric models. Applied Energy, 2022” and “effective three-stage hybrid optimization method for source-network-load power generation of cascade hydropower reservoirs serving multiple interconnected power grids, Journal of Cleaner Production, 2019”.

Reply: Citation found to be not appropriate to the article, and inclusion was declined.

Comment 3) Line 33: please add, if deemed appropriate, the following reference “Detailed simulation of storage hydropower systems in large Alpine watersheds, JOH, 2021” and “Impact of the quality of hydrological forecasts on the management and revenue of hydroelectric reservoirs – a conceptual approach, HESS, 2021.”

Reply: Paragraph and suggested reference added (Lines 59-60)

Comment 4)Line 134: I think that “Where” should not have the capitol letter.

Reply: revised, as requested (Lines 128, 136, 148)

Comment 5) Line 161: “tine”?

Reply: Not clear what the reviewer requested.

Comment 6) Could the authors provide a table with the different “Reservoir Adaptation Measures” described in section 2.6?

Reply: Table 2 included, as requested (Lines 206).

Reviewer 2 Report

The paper analyzes the impact of climate change on the operational work of the water reservoir. The presented idea is well-defined, but I must propose a major revision.

-literature review is poorly written. There is no base of the literature review that will deal with the presented methodology or description of the calculation methods.

-paper explains the impact of climate changes on water balance, but there is no description of the pattern of water reservoir volume. Such is of crucial importance in this research. I insist on such an analysis, which should also be added to the literature review.

Proofreading by a native English speaker or professor of the English language should be provided.

Comment 1) "literature review is poorly written. There is no base of the literature review that will deal with the presented methodology or description of the calculation methods."

Reply: In the Introduction chapter, the article highlights the state of the art of the reservoir operation under climatic impacts with dozens of updated and seminal references, and included recent references, as suggested by Reviewer 1 (see above).

Comment 2) "paper explains the impact of climate changes on water balance, but there is no description of the pattern of water reservoir volume. Such is of crucial importance in this research. I insist on such an analysis, which should also be added to the literature review."

Reply: As opposed to what Reviewer 2 affirmed above, reservoir volume analyses are made throughout the article. Please refer to reservoir Storage in Figures 3, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13. These figures clearly show the dynamics of reservoir Storage (S) along the years, as a fuction of the water balance equation (Equation 5)

This time paper is improved.

I am suggesting accepting the paper.
