Cover Story: Martial arts studies are invariably led by scholar–practitioners who research, practice, and teach the styles they write about. In this methodological article, we use Capoeira, one of the most academically studied martial arts, as a case study to develop a typology of ten essential scholar–practitioner types, from supportive scholars assisting immersed apprentices to experimental leaders and inquisitive teachers. We show how, in one’s career, a given person can move across the typology. Our analysis presents the strengths and limitations of each type while advocating for collaborative research across the scholar–practitioner continuum, and we suggest the potential for this typology to be used in a range of activities where the practice is a central part of research design. View this paper
