Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

X-ray imaging has become an important tool to investigate the solidification of alloys. One critical point is to reach a sufficient contrast. Besides technical progress machine learning in image detection helps a lot. The authors show impressive results from their investigations. The paper is well written and can be published in its current form.

The only thing which could be improve is the visibility of the vectors in Fig. 9 d and 9e.

Dear Reviewer,

We are grateful for your comments.

We have now modified Figs. 9d and 9e, and improved the visibility of the vectors.

Best wishes,

Reviewer 2 Report

The manuscript entitled: 'Investigating Metal Solidification with X-ray Imaging' aims in using in situ radiography to capture solidification events of Al including the grain refinement of primary Al dendrites, nucleation and growth of Al-based alloys, and fluid dynamics during solidification.  The radiography results are combined with machine learning techniques.

I have the following minor suggestions/comments:

  • Fig. 2 Y-axis legend is not clear. Please make it clear along with its units.
  • Typos in the manuscript need attention. For instance, wt % should be written as wt.%.
  • Scale bar is missing in Figs. 4, 5, and 9.

Reviewer 3 Report

This paper presents an overview of the research conducted at the University of Oxford over the last 6 years. Obviously, they have acquired some achievements in terms of the solidification of Al alloys via in situ X-ray radiography. Insights have been obtained relating to the burst formation, growth and stability of α-Al crystals; the formation and growth behaviour of Al-based IMCs; and the thermo-solutal and shrinkage-induced liquid flow. This will help provide a reference for the control of microstructure-property. In my opinion, the paper is an excellent review paper that is recommended for publication in Metals without any revision.
