Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

TITLE OF THE PAPER:

“Changes in the medieval colour scheme of the southern facade of Wroclaw town hall – a case study”

DECISION RECOMMENDATION:

Reconsider after major revisions

COMMENTS:

1) A very concrete example of buildings archaeology/ colour study, but too large parts of the text are pure descriptive. The discussion with an outlook needs to be expanded so the town hall, the investigation and its results are contextualised.

2) The present headlines are quite insipid. The “Results” pp 3-10 are for the first part a long description of the building with many details; is of relevance or necessary? The second part goes into the main subject of the article, the colours. The chapter ought to be divided and each marked with proper/ narrative/ rich in content headlines.

3) The final chapter now called “Conclusion” pp 14, needs as mentioned to be expanded, maybe partly located at the beginning, so we learn what context the town hall belongs to and why its colours and thereby the investigation might be of interest.

4) Check the English language: e g color or colour, relics or remains. There might be more to look for, however someone else have to asses this

Author Response

Dear Reviewer,

Thank you for your comments.

1) In order to fully trace the architectural layout of the southern façade, it is necessary to discuss its architecture and detailing.  The discussion of the colour scheme has been extended to include examples of town halls in Silesia.

2) The chapter devoted to the results of the research was divided, with a detailed discussion of the changes in the architecture of the southern elevation and the colour scheme. The medieval composition of the façade includes the architectural decor together with the colour scheme. A too general discussion of the decoration will not show the fullness of the Gothic façade in its colour scheme from around 1486 and from around 1510.

3) The last chapter was extended and completed with the context of the medieval colouring and articulation of the town hall elevations.

4) The article was proofread by a British native speaker, with special attention being paid to the consistency of language (UK English).

Thank you very much for your suggestions.

Best regards
