Mapping the Anthropocene: Atelier NL, a Case Study of Place-Based Material Craft Practices
Round 1
Reviewer 1 Report
This is a really interesting topic and the argument within in it is quite well made. There are issues to do with the structure and the assumed knowledge of the reader. This results in key ideas and concepts being introduced late on in the paper. Also it should be remembered that journal has an international readership so the authors should introduce key people such as William Morris and why he is pertinent to the argument. Also terms like modernity need to be introduced at the beginning and the authors' interpretation of modernity described.
Abstract
Line 11 Who are the Harrisons? Should their work be contextualised in 21 st Century as it is applied to a contemporary craft company, why the 20th Century this is not a historical paper?
Line 14 What is a planner? Who is Patrick Geddes? British biologist, sociologist, Comtean positivist, geographer, philanthropist and pioneering town planner
Introduction
There needs to be a fuller explanation of Atelier NL in the introduction?
Lines 362 – 365 , the SDGs should be introduced earlier in the introduction, if this is the criteria for evaluating the success of the project.
Lines 132 – 133 Need to introduce them properly in the introduction. Helen Mayer (1927-2018) and Newton Harrison (1932-2022) were an American husband-and-wife artist, team simply known as the Harrisons.
Also if modernity is an important concept it needs to be explained in the introduction.
Line 34 - Better to say urban planner (Line 70 - This is a better way of introducing him: The 19th century Scottish town planner Patrick Geddes’ (1854-1932)).
The Anthropocene: a case for a return to sustainable living
Line 328 - Talk about modernity’s relationship to the Anthropocene here rather than leaving it to the end.
Line 82 - Current or contemporary not modern?
Line 124 -Dates of that movement?
Line 143 -147 - Cite and explain the principles
Line 155 - interview Anne Douglas and Mark 155 Hope: 24 September 2018). Who are these people? Should interviewees by anonymized?
Line 206 - What were the dominant assumptions of mapping modernity? First time modernity is mentioned?
Method
Line 210 There should be a substantial section here on the case study method? It should discuss the strengths and weaknesses of that approach. There should also be some indication of the ethical review of the method. Also making it explicit the relationship between the researcher and the researched. Who is the researcher and how do they relate to the design company?
Line 241 – if permission has not been gained should this image be used?
Line 333 William Morris really important – but need to introduce him for an international audience.
Lines 362 – 365 , the SDGs should be introduced earlier in the introduction, if this is the criteria for evaluating the success of the project.
It needs a good copy edit, checking for typos and missed words/letters.

This is a fascinating and timely study bringing together theory and practice, design and art practice, historical and current work. The piece also entails a theoretical advancement to do with the positioning of mapping as a strategy for localised production, using as a case study Atelier NL. The piece is original, well written and a pleasure to read. I will most certainly cite it in my work.
