Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

An outstanding contribution to Picasso scholarship--and to semiotics!

Thank you for your kind words about the manuscript.

Congratulations! I find your paper extremely interesting, with a new regard on subject. Just one minor remarque: some of word in your main narration stay in color, in the middle fo your sentences.  I do not think that they should stay like that.

Author Response

Thank you for your kind words about the manuscript.

Thank you, also, for noting the words and letters in color.  They were words inserted in the course of editing, shown in color by the "track changes" software.  I have gone through the manuscript and "accepted" these changes, causing the words and letters to shift to black.

You suggest in your review notes that the references could be improved.  I would be grateful for specific suggestions about how to do this.

Thank you for your careful reading and your assistance!

Reviewer 3 Report

An interesting interdisciplinary approach to Picasso's work, adequately researched and referenced. It surveys art historiography dealing with Picasso and semiotics with lengthy analyses of Saussure's semantic analysis. It concludes with an interesting approach to the well-researched illustration of Reverdy's Le chant des morts, published by Teriade. I believe that the article should be published in the special issue dedicated to Picasso as it is highly relevant.
