Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

It is proposed to use fewer tables and to use graphing in part of the information presented.
The study is of interest, it proposes alternatives with less impact on the use of fishmeal and with lower production costs; it does not address it in the discussion. It is not concluded on these issues as an alternative with benefits that did not demonstrate detrimental growth effects in the diet.

Author Response

Thank you for your comments. The dietary amino acid composition table (former table 3) was combined with the formulation and dietary composition table (Table 1). We appreciate the recommendation of using figures, however, we believe the tables are the best fit for most of our data, and we are confident they are reader-friendly.

In lines 281-289, we discuss the lack of growth differences when salmon and other fish species are fed SBM-based diets. The following sentence was added in the discussion to address the reviewer’s point on soybean meal as an alternative to fishmeal “Conservative inclusion levels of standard SBM at the expense of fishmeal appears to be suitable as long as no intestinal health impairment is noticed.”

Reviewer 2 Report

Respected authors. Comments are stated in the MS.

Author Response

  1. Did you mean Table 1 and 2? If you insert Table 3 in citation, refer on dietary extrusion parameters also.

Response: Thank you. All tables citations were revised throughout the manuscript.

  1. Usually, K (as %) in salmonid fish is calculated simply as K = 100 x (BW/FL3)

Please explain noted equation and 105

Response: Well highlighted, thank you. There was a typo in the formula, which was corrected accordingly. We apologise for the inconvenience.

  1. Please organise performance parameters by order of equations. Where in the equations are the following stated abbreviations in text: WWin, DWout, CF?

Response: Done.

  1. Table 4 has no reference in text.

Response: Done.

  1. Since tables are supposed to be self-explanatory, please add more info on histology measurements (length, abundance, ..) in the title or inside the table.

Response: Table description was revised accordingly.

  1. Since tables are supposed to be self-explanatory, please add more info on blood chemistry in the title (of what?, fed with what? in experiment?)

Response: Table description was revised accordingly.

  1. as previous notes about table being self-explanatory

Response: Table description was revised accordingly.
