Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

This manuscript presents selection guidelines for AR in maxillofacial surgery. The manuscript is well-written and technically sound. The reviewer recommends the manuscript for publication pending the following three minor improvements:

  1. Figs 3, 5 and 7 are OK but could be considered for visual improvement as the reviewer finds them less pleasing to read.
  2. It seems the authors only mentioned the hardware of AR. Can the authors also present/elaborate on the software side (such as software packages, simulations, etc) and provide some examples for each subspecialty?
  3. Also some recent references/reviews, doi: 10.1016/B978-0-12-823299-6.00005-5 (AR in maxillofacial surgery), 10.1080/17434440.2016.1243054 (surgical simulation for maxillofacial surgery), 10.1109/RBME.2017.2773521 (surgical simulation).

Reviewer 2 Report

This is an exceptionally good paper that shows how augmented reality is useful nowaday and could be useful in surgery. It could be an important cue also for other surgical branches.

Reviewer 3 Report

Dear coleagues,

congratulations on this intersting analysis on the the application of HMD in three operative scenarios of the maxillofacial domain. In my opinion the section 2.1 "Desk research on maxillofacial practises" is  too long and sounds textbook like, sure the readers do know what onchology, orthognatic and trauma surgery are I reccomend to shorten the section, if you want to keep the section you could mention teh actual gold standards for these surgeries like CAD CAM for ocho and navigation system for orthognatic and trauma surgery .

A few grammar mistakes should be corrected ( e.g. line 31 "was born", line 57 "a way os saying states that", others..).

On the other hand the analysis is interesting and worth pubblishing.

Kind regards,

the reviewer
