Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The paper needs an extensive language review and an improvement of the quality of presentation.

Some form remarks:
- There is a figure in the abstract
- Fig.1 should be enlarged.
- Fig.2 is not cited through the text.

Content remarks:
- The quality of introduction must be improved by clarifying the contents and improving the quality of presentation.

- In Chapter 2 a picture of the real experimental apparatus should be added

- Which plugging agent does Figure 6 refer to?

Reviewer 2 Report

The authors developed a plugging agent with high strength, temperature resistant, salt resistant and micro-expansion features for Baikouquan oilfield, and the field test on this plugging agent was introduced. This manuscript is interesting. However, after a careful review of the paper, some details need to be revised. Therefore, it is recommended to revise the paper to increase its readability. Here are some suggestions.

1.  The abstract section, there are a lot of very long sentences needed be cut to more than one sentence. As well as, in the first sentence, a complete sentence can not be followed by with. The authors need to improve the language of the paper.

2.  The first paragraph in Introduction, it does not need to introduce the detail of the development process of Baikouquan oilfield. For an academic paper, a straightforward statement on the key problem for exploiting the oil in Baikouquan oilfield are recommended here, and more words should be given to introduce the literature research on the Plugging Agent. The following references are recommended to added in this paper to enhance the introduction.

A polymer plugging gel for the fractured strata and its application. Materials, 2018, 11: 1-21.

Development and evaluation of composite plugging agent of water-absorbent swelling resin. Oilfield Chemistry, 2021, 38(2): 196-203.

Temporary plugging agent system for thermally induced phase change fracturing in shale gas reservoirs. Energy & Fuels, 2022, 36(12): 6270-6279.

3.  The plugging agent is the key innovation in this manuscript. However, authors just gave a short paragraph to introduce this plugging agent, please add more detail information on this plugging agent, such as the design concept, compositions and their ratio, preparation method, function, characteristic, etc. of this new plugging agent. Thus, the Section 2 is recommended to just introduce the plugging agent including the detail as mentioned above. And the title of Section 2 is suggested as New High-strength Plugging Agent, which can also be highly sticked to the topic of this manuscript.

4.  Section 3 is recommended to introduce the performance evaluation by laboratory tests, thus, the title should be “performance evaluation by laboratory tests”, and the contents including the properties of strength, expansion, rheology, salt resistance, etc. as mentioned in this manuscript. Thus, some part in Section 2 should be moved into the modified Section 3.

5.  More detail on the relation of the performance tested in laboratory and the performance in field application for the new plugging agent should be given in Section 4, which can give more evidences to state the new plugging agent developed and evaluated in laboratory can meet the demand in field condition.

6.  In Section 4, It is suggested to add a comparison of the leaking stoppage effect among the new plugging agent and other existing plugging materials for stating the advantage of the new plugging agent in filed application.

7.  The conclusions and abstract should be rewrite following by the new structure and content of the modified manuscript.

8.  Please recheck the format of the reference and revise it correctly.

9.  Some mistakes are in this manuscript, for example: 1) “Mpa” should be “MPa”; a blank should be added between number and unit; Line 147, “0.5-week, 1 week, 5 weeks, 10 weeks, 15 weeks, 20 weeks 147 and 25 weeks”, this first one has “-0”, but the others do not have, they should be unified.

Reviewer 3 Report

Sun et al. provided an interesting study regarding plugging agents in Baikouquan. Sufficient experimental work has been done in this work, and the results are meaningful. From the point of view of the reviser, the article could be considered to be accepted with minor revisions. The detailed comments are listed below.

1.     Kindly be more concise and informative in the abstract part; sentences like “The new plugging technology has good application prospect” could be removed.

2.     Kindly elaborate on the definition of “plugging strength” at its first appearance article.

3.     For experiential data plots, it is recommended to use only dots.

4.     Kindly add a discussion regarding the performance of the plugging agent in the fracture-matrix system; the article below is suggested to be consulted starting point. Permeability measurement of the fracture-matrix system with 3D embedded discrete fracture model. Petroleum Science 2022.

5.     Kindly use quantitative words to deliver messages and avoid using general phrase like “good” in scientific articles.

Reviewer 4 Report

The manuscript entitled “A Novel Application of New High-strength Plugging Agent in Baikouquan Oilfield” deals with the plugging technology on oilfield wells. The following amendments ought to be done before any potential publication of the article:

Abstract: The sentences from “With the Baikouquan … micro-fracture” must be rewritten, the meaning is not clear.

Introduction, l. 45: Why is “Wells” in caps?

Section 2, l. 133: What do the authors mean “… were opened in turn”? Clarify.

Section 2, “Expansion performance of plugging agent”: The method protocol must be mentioned as well the relevant references.

Section 3: Statistical data regarding the results are missing. For instance, the statistical significance (p) of the data in Figure 6, etc.

Section 3, l. 193: Mention the number of the figure you referred to.

Section 5: Write conclusions instead of “conclusion”.

Check and correct in the whole manuscript: i) Leave a space before citations (e.g. l. 69, 73, 84, 90, etc.).

Ii) Use a space after punctuation and not before (e.g. l. 170, 220, 355, 362, 366, etc.).

iii) Before units put an empty space (e.g. l. 138, 139, 148, 149, etc.)

Round 2

Reviewer 1 Report

The paper still needs a language revision to enhance the quality of presentation.

Changes are not well highlighted.

The title of Results chapter is missing, probably at row 192.

About Figure 6, I did not find information about which plugging agent it is refereed throughout the text.

Reviewer 2 Report

The comments for the previous version were improved in some degree, however, a few of them are still not modified thoroughly, please check the comments of the previous version and modify the manuscript more carefully. The details for checking on this version are as follows:

1. The English expression and typo should be checked carefully. For example, Line 223, "Based on experimental data. " can not be a complete sentence.

2. More discussion should be given for the Section 4, as mentioned before, the advantages and disadvantages of the plugging agent and its economy should be given.

3. The conclusions should be rewritten to summarize the significant findings of this manuscript.

4. The format of the references should be checked, lots of mistakes of them need to be modified, for example, some references have the whole authors names, but some of them just have the first three authors names; references 24-26 even have no authors name.
