Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

General:

The paper shows the research on the application of BIM on road engineering, which is not that common, so the value of the paper is in filling this gap. Also, it proposes a method that classifies the interchange components of the BIM model. The developed method is applied on the model to describe its full potential. I have only minor remarks that are stated below point by point.

Remarks:

1. There are no line numbers, therefore it is hard to review the manuscript and comment on specific part of the manuscript. Nonetheless, I referred relatively to some specific parts of manuscript (paragraph, figure, etc).

2. The first sentence of the abstract is of poor style, and it is too long. Please recreate this part to be more readable.

3. Also in the abstract, following part is unclear: “…and a coding method based on a combination code were proposed.”

Introduction and references

The introduction provides sufficient background, and all the included references are relevant to the research.

Methods

4. Figure 3 needs to be recreated because it lacks some information on code parts.

Results

Application of the proposed method is well presented on BIM model of the interchange.

Conclusions

5. It would be nice to write one/two sentences before the enumeration part is introduced.

Reviewer 2 Report

The paper presents a study that aims at providing a theoretical basis for the classification and coding of BIM components for interchanges, the classification of BIM models, and the creation and management of component libraries. The research proposes the use of a scale designed by the Authors that follows the approach already applied in existing standards such as the UK, USA, etc. one. However, no mention about the relevant international standard like the ISO 19650 series where the concept of Level of Information Need is introduced and the European EN 17412-1 where the concept is extended and integrated with detailed components.

The scale proposed by the Authors in the presentation of the framework appears quite generic and its evolution is related only to the evolution of the design stage considering an integration of information and an improvement of the geometric quality with no reference to both the possible uses of the BIM models that impact on the information content and the stability of the information related to the scale.

In the proposed case study, the identification of specific information is presented (e.g. table 7) but it is not clear how this information set has been defined. Is it an example proposed by the Authors or is it a set of information defined according to e.g. a survey that can be considered as part of the proposed standardization?

To improve the work the aspects above mentioned should be analyzed and integrated in the research to presents a more integrated work aligned with the existing standards and able to contribute in answering to the open questions that still exist in the development of standardized BIM libraries.

Round 2

Reviewer 2 Report

The Authors addressed all the reviewer comments. The research flow of the paper is now more coherent with the existing relevant standards.

Considering the last comment, that is the evolution of the scale, and the related response, it would be worth mention in the conclusions that the study has been developed considering the Chinese market and further research may be needed to check the applicability and generalization of the same to other markets.
