Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

In this paper, the authors demonstrated a method to improve target detection based on polarization fusion. The study conducted is systematic and complete, and the results support the authors' claim. However, the structuring, writing as well as scientific errors of the manuscript needs to be improved in order to be considered for publication on Applied Science.

1.      The Introduction paragraph is almost irrelevant to the main text: there is nothing related to the explosion manifested in the main text.

2.      The citations of the references are not proper. Here are (but are not limited to) some examples:

a.      The authors should avoid citing references in groups at the end of several paragraphs. Instead, the citation of the references should be more specific to sentences.

b.      Lack of citations on “Different scholars have made targeted revisions to the T-S model, making its adaptability better and better.”

3.      The writing authors definitely need to improve their writing.

a.      The style is too colloquial.

b.      There are several typos (e.g., Mueller matrix, not Miller or Muller matrix)

c.      Missing or improper explanations on abbreviations. (e.g., What is DOP image?)

4.      What is the purpose of mentioning MPA in details if it was just served as an integrated part of a commercially available polarization camera in this paper?

5.      How can the full stokes vector be recovered if the MPA only contains 4 linear polarizers? The V element, which is the difference between two circular polarization is not able to be measured without a circular polarizer.

Author Response

Dear editor and reviewer,

Thank you for offering us an opportunity to improve the quality of our submitted manuscript. We appreciated very much the reviewr'sconstructive and insightful comments. The specific reply is as follows, and I have submitted a new revised draft, please have a look.

Comment 1:  The Introduction paragraph is almost irrelevant to the main text: there is nothing related to the explosion manifested in the main text.

Response 1:  The Introduction paragraph has been modified to the following contents:

As the demand for target acquisition continues to increase, higher requirements are placed on the capability and accuracy of target identification and information acquisition. Compared with traditional optical detection methods, multidimensional composite detection technology not only improves the ability to simultaneously acquire information such as target intensity distribution and physical and chemical properties but also greatly increases the amount of information obtained compared to traditional optical detection technology. At the same time, the accuracy of target detection and identification has been improved, especially in complex environments where it has a significant impact on target identification, and thus has been widely used in various fields.

To better identify targets in complex background environments, we have developed a high-resolution multispectral polarimetric imaging system, which can achieve accurate target identification by distinguishing the polarization contrast information between targets and backgrounds, and has an important role in public security surveillance, target identification, and early warning, and detection of military targets.

Comment 2: The citations of the references are not proper. Here are (but are not limited to) some examples:

  1. The authors should avoid citing references in groups at the end of several paragraphs. Instead, the citation of the references should be more specific to sentences.
  2. Lack of citations on “Different scholars have made targeted revisions to the T-S model, making its adaptability better and better.”

Response 2: a. We have quoted references to specific sentences instead of whole paragraphs.

  1. Related references have been added:

Comment 3:  The writing authors definitely need to improve their writing.

  1. The style is too colloquial.
  2. There are several typos (e.g., Mueller matrix, not Miller or Muller matrix)
  3. Missing or improper explanations on abbreviations. (e.g., What is DOP image?)

Response 3: a. Some English grammars have been modified in this paper.

  1. Has been unified into Muller matrix.
  2. The Dop image has been explained(The DOP image is the polarization degree image).

Comment 4: What is the purpose of mentioning MPA in details if it was just served as an integrated part of a commercially available polarization camera in this paper?

Response 4: MPA is a part of this system, but there are too many descriptions of MPA, and we have deleted the MPA part. Thank you very much for your opinion.

Point 5:  How can the full stokes vector be recovered if the MPA only contains 4 linear polarizers? The element, which is the difference between two circular polarization is not able to be measured without a circular polarizer.

Response 5:You are absolutely right.  MPA can’t recover the full stokes vector, we have modified the relevant statements.

Reviewer 2 Report

It is an interesting work. In the paper, the authors demonstrated a multispectral polarization imaging system with high resolution. The polarization mathematical and physical model of the basic components of the target/background is constructed by simulation modeling. The experimental result shows the proposed method can be used to detect physical evidence targets in complex background and effectively improve target contrast. The calculation and experimental analyses were well presented. Nevertheless, there is a question that can be raised related to the paper:

It may be a confidential topic, but I suggest that more information about the background and reported works can be discussed in the Introduction part.
