Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

Figure 1 needs an additional description to relate the fruits on display to family name: row 1 Solanaceae; row 2 Solanaceae; row 3 Cucurbitaceae.

Line 89: cited article [99] out of order.

Lines 143, 150, 168, 209: cited articles are out of order.

Line 168 - references must be numbered in the order they are cited - 69,95; then in Line 173, it is 70,71. This needs to be corrected.

Line 202 - it is 83.

Line 215 - it is 86; 84 and 85 appear in Line 225.

References must follow reference style as accepted by the journal, consult the Instructions for Authors and recent publications for guidelines. References style must be improved.

Reviewer 2 Report

The manuscript is difficult to comprehend. There are far too many grammatical errors. There aren't any references in a lot of places. I'm having trouble understanding what the writers are truly intending to express. I recommend that the paper be subjected to extensive English editing before going through the review process.

Reviewer 3 Report

Dear authors,

The manuscript entitled: "Formation and development of vegetable fruit shape" is written at a good level. Research in the field of molecular biology to increase quantitative and qualitative traits is very important, especially in relation to ensure the human nutrition in critical areas of the Earth. Nevertheless, I have a few comments and recommendations for this review:

In the context of the title of this manuscript, I recommend adding a chapter on external influences (biotic and abiotic stresses), which can affect the formation and development of vegetable fruit shape on the molecular level. Or, change the name, such as: Genetic and molecular regulation mechanisms in the formation and development of vegetable fruit shape.

Chapter 2 describes the domestication of different families, but not the development process. Only a few lines at the end of the chapter are devoted to this. Especially in the context of the title, I recommend supplementing this chapter or changing its title.

L 29 and 43 - I recommend using the more common name for this family - Asteraceae.

Please check the statement between lines 51-54 (1000 kg?)

L 56 - Hemsleya chinensis - use italics to indicate species.

L 59 - Figure 1 has nothing to do with this statement. Please move the label to the next sentence.

L 109 - CLV abbreviation. Please enter this abbreviation after the first mentioned name in L 107.

L 122 - Brassica juncea - use italics to indicate species.

In References, no source indicated 7.

Weaker elements include current cited references (below 30% of the total).

Overall, in the References chapter, resources are not listed at the required level.

Reviewer 4 Report

Wang et al reviewed the literature about the formation and development of fruit shape. The article while having a concept appropriate for Applied Sciences, is plagued by serious shortcomings, thus I have to propose the rejection of the manuscript.

In detail.

  1. The use of English language is weak throughout the manuscript. In my opinion, the article should be re-written as the reader will struggle to comprehend the meanings. Moreover, little or no cohesion exists in the text making it even more difficult to follow (for example the abstract is full of un-connected, difficult to follow single sentences with little or no structure. This applies for all the manuscript).
  2. The topic of the review is already covered by other similar works. For example:

Shaping a fruit: Developmental pathways that impact growth patterns. By van der Knaapa and Østergaard. In comparison to this work, the review of Wang et al, feels rushed and unorganized.

  1. Some of the terminology used by the authors can be confusing (for example “dried fruits”, “domestication methods”, “elongated fruit vegetable”, “Solanaceae is an important vegetable for human diet”, “This family mainly contains five important vegetable categories”.
  2. The vegetable domestication process is also superficially covered, providing information widely available.
  3. The “molecular aspect” of the paper (examining the effects of genes and hormonal effect on fruit size) is more appropriate but is still short and superficial and the coordination and co-regulation of these factors were not examined. The authors should use this part as a basis for a new manuscript.

Reviewer 5 Report

The review article entitled "Genetic and molecular regulation mechanisms in the formation and development of vegetable fruit shape " discussed the process and analyzed the genetic and molecular regulation mechanisms in vegetable crops, including Carpel number, fruit length, fruit weight, and Hormonal regulation of fruit shapes. The study is on a topic of relevance and general interest to the journal's readers. However, I have several concerns about presenting the data that should be addressed before publication.

  • The authors need to carefully read through the manuscript to correct typos and grammars to improve the manuscript.
  • Any abbreviation must be associated with the full name at the first mention in the manuscript to allow the reader to follow up because not all the readers are familiar with the abbreviated terminology.
  • Figure 2 needs to be reproduced in a larger format
  • The citation needs to be formatted according to the MDPI journal style.

Reviewer 4 Report

The authors improved their manuscript, however, I still believe that most (if not all) of the parts of the review are already explored in other similar works. I propose the transfer of the manuscript to a lower-impact publication.
