Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

Congratulations for this valuable paper.

My suggestion is to add more pictures from the 453 images set that you have collected for this study. Ideally is to add all images as supplementary resources for this paper even if on a reduced resolution since probably the file size is significant.

Reviewer 2 Report

In the present work titled "Style recognition of door god paintings by hypothesis testing for texture features of painting patterns" the authors propose the experimental results of their research, showing some textural features of some paintings useful for recognizing unknown artist(s)’ painting styles.

The work is quite complex and with a large amount of data, which are summarily well discussed and presented. Some general comments and suggestions below.

In the “Introduction” and in the section “Research Aim” the author give an overview of the problem addressed, and above all, they related to Chinese architectural artworks and focus on the problems related to the degradation that paintings can undergo.

Also, they discuss the current literature (especially in section 3.2), saying that literature and restorations of door god paintings is quite scarce and that at the same time the image processing methods have also demonstrated their effectiveness in artwork defect detections by providing useful information for artwork restoration. In this regard, in order to improve the work, I suggest also taking into consideration a more recent literature where different techniques are used for paintings and pigments of unknown origin and nature (Multi-analytical study of roman frescoes from villa dei quintili (rome, italy) doi 10.1016/j.jasrep.2018.08.028.; A combined non-destructive and micro-destructive approach to solving the forensic problems in the field of cultural heritage: two case studies doi 10.3390/app11156951; Multi-spectral imaging system (IWN) for the digitization and investigation of cultural heritage).

Research Material - Line 143-146 - In the first few sentences, the authors repeatedly use "temples" and "this research". Please use synonyms otherwise the speech is repetitive.

In table 1 the authors contain the data relating to "acquired auspicious pattern images". Is it possible to add a representative image/graphic that makes the process better understood?

Can these results be compared with other techniques used in the same field to study unknown paintings?
