Endothelial Reprogramming in Sports Traumatology: Role of the Widespread Neuro-Immuno-Endocrine-Endothelial System
Round 1
Reviewer 1 Report
The document theoretically evidences that endothelial functions are essential for the vascular homeostasis maintenance, and based on this, it is intended to relate whether physical activity and sport are capable of modifying the functional structure of the endothelium. The scope and limitations of the paper are described below:
a- It is necessary that the Abstract demonstrates all the research objectives.
b- There is content in Methods not specific to the section, the theoretical foundations must be evidenced in the introduction, or another section of free choice.
c- Emphasis should be placed on the research type, both in the Abstract and in Methods.
d- Direct investigations that sport and systematic physical activity can reprogram the endothelium should be recommended, not just indirect exemplifications.
e- Citations in the Conclusions section are not recommended.
f- Research is very useful prospectively, but the content should be better organized in the sections.
Author Response
- We reviewed abstracts and methods. We clarified the objectives and scope of the study. We identified and described them separately.
-
We have added other bibliographical references and rearranged the study, to show the hypotheses.
-
We have revised the conclusions, removing bibliographical references and reformulating the contents of the section. We rewrote the conclusions by reviewing the hypothesis of the study.
-
We have reorganized the literature in the various sections.

The neuro-immuno-endocrine pathophysiology of the endothelial system is indeed an important subject that surely has a role in sports pathology. However, it is difficult to identify this role in the article.
1. The design of the article is not clear. It is not about research or literature review. It is more like a communication. It is difficult to identify the authors' contribution and the novelty of the concepts.
2. The title specifies sports traumatology. However, the results only concern: vascular injury in rats, coronary pathology, sedentary lifestyle and obesity, menopause and estrogen therapy.
3. line 94-99 The second objective appears different in the abstract. The third objective is not clearly stated.
4. line 100-288 Material and method. This is more a compilation of a few research works on the subject that do not concern sports traumatology. None of the tables or figures are referenced in the text.
5. The conclusion is again a review of some publications. At the end, "the total plasma anti-oxidant capacity test is usable for an assessment of endothelial function"with "the objective to introduce in the practice of Sport Medicine a new test in the fields of “Athlete functional valuation” and “Sports fitness”.
