Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The study aim at designing the automobile interior CMF based on Kansei engineering and eye-tracking 15 technology due to the lack of systematic studies on the design and evaluation of automobile interior CMF. The authors need to deeply elaborate the latest study on designing and evaluation of automobile interior CMF to highligth this research gap. The novelty, clarity and quality of presentation is good. The manuscript need minor revisions.

Reviewer 2 Report

This paper discusses the methods of accessing designing the color, material, and finishing (CMF) of automotive interiors and proposes a design process for systematically designing and evaluating the CMF of automotive interiors based on Kansei engineering and eye-tracking technology. Overall, the research in this paper can contribute to the development of a custom-oriented design process that satisfies customer demands and has practical implications for the automotive industry.

I find this paper well written and effectively highlighting the challenges and problems in accessing the CMF preferences of vehicle interiors. My observations are largely positive with just a few minor points to note:

  1. The title for Figure 6 seems to be missing a word. Perhaps it should read, "The supplementary CMF designs from various samples."
  2. In section 3.5.4, using "p" in lowercase would maintain consistency with other sections like 3.5.5.
  3. It would be beneficial to include a brief description, mathematical symbols, or a couple of citations regarding ANOVA in sections 3.1 and 3.5.4 to make the paper self-explanatory.
  4. Certain references are either challenging to locate or require additional details. For instance, (Wu, 2010) and Zhou et al. (2014). Could you specify if the latter is from a single author, a research paper, a thesis, or another type of publication?

It reads well to me. The only comment is this: the title for Figure 6 seems to be missing a word. Perhaps it should read, "The supplementary CMF designs from various samples."

1.       Topic is more towards statistical analysis related and not science.

2.       Unable to judge on authentication of data set

3.       No design calculations, flowchart, programming etc.

4.       3.2.3 - Kansei measurement is purely qualitative. Research work should be quantitative.

5.       Eye tracking is subjective and time dependent. As humans, I can change my decisions time to time. How these are taken care?

6.       Purpose of this study is not clear.

7.       Study is not adding any value to existing knowledge base.

Article:  The design of automotive interior for Chinese young consumers based on Kansei Engineering and eye-tracking technology

  1. Topic is more towards statistical analysis related and not science.

Reply: Thanks. The paper proposed a process for developing automobile interior CMF systematically and scientifically based on Kansei engineering and eye-movement tracking. Using mathematical methods such as factor analysis, multiple linear regression and quantification theory type I in the Kansei design of products (mainly in the perceptual image analysis step) is well-established by previous studies and please see the references listed in the Introduction part about Kansei design.

  1. Unable to judge on authentication of data set

Reply: Thanks. More explanations were added about the statistical analysis. The methods used were also used to examine the Kansei design of other products. Besides, the data could be available on request.

  1. No design calculations, flowchart, programming etc.

Reply: Thanks! We have added more information on the mathematical methods, especially quantification theory type I. One-way ANOVA and multiple linear regression are common and popular analysis methods used, and are performed by SPSS software. Please refer to the revised part.

  1. 2.3 - Kansei measurement is purely qualitative. Research work should be quantitative.

Reply: Thanks. Kansei measurement is a classic method and is used to examine the human emotions to design products and manufacturing products based on human preferences. It tried to use engineering techniques to quantify various human emotions. Using this method, a number of research studies has already been published in the past years.

  1. Eye tracking is subjective and time dependent. As humans, I can change my decisions time to time. How these are taken care?

Reply: Thanks. Eye movement testing is the process of monitoring the user's eye movement and gaze direction when looking at a specific target through eye tracking technology. It is widely used for measuring human perception/emotion for a product. E.g., human tend to keep an eye on the position of the observed image which they have interests, and the fixation duration of this position would be much longer than other positions. In addition, the experimental design is also very important for using this technology. We have controlled the total time for observation of the designed samples, and the subjects were required to keep staring at the sample that they thought best matched the design style of the group until the disappearance of the stimuli. Please refer to part 3.5.3 for more information of the experimental design.

  1. Purpose of this study is not clear.

Reply: Thanks. We have added more information to state the purpose of this study in the Abstract and Introduction parts.

  1. Study is not adding any value to existing knowledge base.

Reply: Thanks. The design and evaluation of automobile interior CMF has not been systematically and scientifically examined yet. This study proposed a five-stage process for systematically designing the automobile interior CMF. This study has great implications in the design of automotive interiors.

  1. Few references are not related to topic.

Reply: Thanks. We have checked them and deleted them.

  1. Plagiarism checks not done from my end.

Authors to give substantial evidence of authenticated data set used, experiments carried out, quantitative analysis done etc.

Reply: Thanks. We have added more information on the data set used, experiments carried out; quantitative analysis done etc. in the Method part.
