Title:
Dynamics analysis of a variable stiffness tuned mass damper enhanced by an
inerter

Section:
Acoustics and Vibrations.
The Topic seems interesting and worthy to be published. Several physical devices are
exhibited in this paper, such as the inerter, variable stiffness TMD, piezoelectric actuator,
active controller, etc. However, some revisions have to be made.

Here is a list of points that should be considered in the revision:

1) The authors have to improve the English level while writing (some mistakes have been
made).

2) There are certain zones of incomprehension caused by the absence of some key words.

3)
In the modeling, the authors should show the piezo-electric actuator clearer.
4) There are some confusion of constants. The authors had to write b instead of m3.

5) I didnt understand why the features of the piezo-electrics actuator havent appeared in
the system dynamics equations (the charge, the capacitor, and the voltage).

6) I would like you to plot the (RMS) of the amplitude-frequency across the others
displacements in order to see if it isnt possible to see some others unstability zones.

7) Finally, I will recommend to revise carefully the whole manuscript in order to make it
much clearer.

Reviewer 2 Report

I would like to inform you that reviewing the manuscript entitled "Dynamics analysis of a variable stiffness tuned mass damper enhanced by an inerter” has been completed. This paper studies the tuned mass damper with variable stiffness to reduce the vibration without changing the resonant frequency. The presentation of the method is given logically and can be published in this journal. But the authors should revise the manuscript based on the following comments for further review:

1- The revised paper should clarify the strong and weak sides of the proposed control system.

2- The authors should add a section to show the limitations, hypothesis, and construction of the proposed control system.

3- The authors should comprehensively show their ideas in the introduction section.

4- The literature survey is relatively poor for reviewing the literature on the nonlinear and linear seismic designs of the structures with TMD. For that purpose and to improve the quality of the manuscript, all of the following articles should be added to the text of the introduction section and references list. All of these references are relevant to the manuscript's topic.

·         An evaluation of the advantages of friction TMD over conventional TMD, Innovative Infrastructure Solutions, 2021,  6(95)

5- The paper's novelty should be addressed in the introduction section. Also, some results should be expressed numerically in the abstract section.

6- Can the proposed system control the unwanted vibrations under the wind load?

7- Can the proposed system be used for the MDOF structures?

8- Which frequency ratio is suitable for the proposed system subjected to the earthquake load?

9- The conclusion section should be improved by adding the optimal ranges for the parameters of the proposed control system.

Reviewer 3 Report

In this paper, a variable stiffness tuned mass damper enhanced by an inerter is investigated under dynamic excitation. Dynamic equations are established for the novel tuned mass damper which is connected to a 2-DOF primary structure. Numerical simulation is implemented to verify frequency responses. By using a inerter, the total weight is reduced, and at large excitation, the vibration reduction performance are improved. Also, the effect of different parameters on the response are investigated, and shown in very interesting graphical results, which prove the efficiency of the proposed novel tuned mass. This paper is well written and the context is well provided. The results are well explained and generally, the paper is very interesting. From my point of view, the paper is worthwhile to publish in "Applied Science" journal with its current format.

Round 2

Reviewer 2 Report

I would like to inform you that I have reviewed carefully the revised manuscript and response of the authors for the paper entitled “Dynamics analysis of a variable stiffness tuned mass damper enhanced by an inerter” with Manuscript Number: (applsci-2118168) submitted to the Journal of Applied Sciences. The authors have answered and added more details in the revised manuscript based on the comments to improve their research. I believe the revised manuscript has enough novelists and is suitable for publishing in this Journal.
