Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

In this study, the 17 wind-wave-flow multifunctional experimental flume is used to replicate surge circumstances using the orthogonal technique to investigate the contributing factors and their interactions on the sea surface IR characteristics of underwater vehicle wakes.

Overall, it read interesting. Few comments

the interaction analysis of the orthogonal test between the 2 factors shown above was carried out according to the requirements of the experiment, and the table header design scheme of the experiment was obtained from the orthogonal table L6 (33 ) . How to decide the parameters of the orthogonal table and why use  L6 (33 ) need to give a more clear explanation.  The significate and sensitive factors of each should be mentioned to verify the theme of the orthogonal table.

The font style of Table 8. needs to be consistent.

Reviewer 2 Report

This paper presents an interesting subject of the tail track floating diffusion process and a preliminary examination of the influence of waves on that process. Authors theoretically and experimentally used the orthogonal method to preliminary analyze the influencing factors of the surface infrared characteristics of the wake of underwater vehicles under surge conditions and their interaction, and it increases the likelihood of detecting and precisely identifying the wake of large underwater vehicles by accurately modeling the radiation characteristics of the hot wake under surge conditions. They added many factors similar to the real sea conditions. This manuscript is very interesting, well-written, and suitable for publication in Applied Sciences as it is.

Review Manuscript ID applsci-2082920. Analysis of the factors influencing the trailing infrared characteristics of underwater vehicles under surge conditions using the orthogonal method

The present could be useful for researchers working in this field. The manuscript could be published in Applied Sciences after some mayor revisions.

Review redaction when reviewing. This manuscript requires an intense (and compulsory) correction of the English grammar and the spelling. Some examples of redaction mistakes:

Line 60. “KYLEA.BRUCKR” is written in capital letters.

Line 103. “4” What is 4 in this sentence?

Lines 141 to 145. The paragraph “Similarly, as the distance between the sea surface target and the detector studied in this paper is less than 1km, and the calculated weather environment is a typical bright night, without the direct influence of clouds, frost, rain and fog, ignoring the effect of atmospheric path radiation and atmospheric transmission attenuation, through the above analysis, the total spectral radiation of the sea surface target is expressed as equation (9)” is repeated in lines 146 to 150.

Table 2. What is “clam”?

Lines 315, 316, and 321. “According” is repeated.

It would be desired to response the following comments and questions:

A good description of all the figures must be presented in the text.

Line 104. What are the forces considered in this study?

All the terms of Eq. 5, 6, 7, and 8 must be defined.

Please, report references for Eq. 5, 6, 7, and 8.

Line 127. Why the emissivity of the target surface is taken as 0.8? This must selection be argued.

Line 186. The selection of the ratio (1:128) must be explained with more detail

Lines 256-258. “The water temperature management in the tank is, however, suboptimal due to the close closeness of the experimental time period, and some experimental error occurs.” What is the experimental error? Could you control it?

All the references presented are in the Introduction. Please (very important), report references of others published papers comparing the obtained results of this manuscript with others studies.
