1. Line 138: could you please further describe the noise model you used to add to the simulated data? Is it based on analytical noise model, or based on empirical noise measurements from the instrument? Since the inversion accuracy is sensitive to noise, it is better to numerically describe the noise model used in this paper.

2. In section 2.2, for the simulated observation data, could you please provide more details about the simulation configuration? For example, sun position, observation angle, O2 density, etc..  If all experiments were based on the same simulation configuration setup, it is better to test more simulation configurations to verify the robustness of experiment conclusion.

3. From section 4.3, priori constraints play the key role to improve inversion accuracy. The priori temperature used is directly from MSISE-00 atmospheric model database. Is it the only available temperature profile in the database? If there are other available temperature profiles from the database, could you please explain why this specific profile is selected as the priori for inversion?

Review report on the manuscript "Algorithm for retrieval of temperature in Mesosphere and Lower Thermosphere from O2 A-band night glow" by Wang et al..

The paper is devoted to adaptation of non-linear iterative inversion method based on optimization theory to retrieving procedure of temperature by observations of O2 A-band night glow. I consider this result as essential input to investigations of mesopause – lower thermosphere region. The accuracy of observation could be essentially improved by utilizing this algorithm.

The introduction is informative. The analysis and conclusions of the paper are reasonable. I found this paper enjoyable to read, and I recommend this paper for publication in Applied Sciences as it is.
