Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

This is a very good manuscript which presented the enhance performance of riveted joints of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic and Steel Plates with adhesive. The abstract was written clearly with  3P's and 1 C's concept. A wide range of literature was reviewed to justify the need for this research. The experimental section is clear and reproducible, though the presentation of the experiments can be improved. Rivet joints with and without adhesives were tested and bolted joint with several different configurations (with washer/ without washer, with/without adhesives etc) were tested. The results are clear. It was concluded that using structural adhesives for both riveted and bolted joints for all the configurations improve the joint performance. The conclusions were drawn based on experimental observations and additional numerical simulation. The manuscript deserves to be published. Few comments for improvements:

1.  Figure 1 caption is confusing. Please improve it.

2.  For the riveting which plate was in the head side? the CFRP or the steel plate?

3. At the very early in the experimental section please include all the joining configurations probably in a table form. For example, I can see the riveting joint was made in 3 configurations: Just riveting, with adhesives but just under the rivet head and tail and finally, with adhesives including the whole bonding area. Similarly, for bolted joints: Just bolted, washer in left side, washer in right side, washer in both sides, with and without adhesives etc. Please include these information early so that the results are not presented to the reader as a surprise.

4.  Figure 4b: is it for area bonding or the whole bonding? Please include a picture for the third condition.

5.  Figure 6: Why not include type 5 and type 3 here?

Author Response

  1. Figure 1 caption is confusing. Please improve it.

> For better understanding, we’ve revised the Figure 1.

  1. For the riveting which plate was in the head side? the CFRP or the steel plate?

> The blind rivet head is located on the CFRP plate. It can be found in the revised Figure 1.

> Thanks for your advice. We added the table of experimental cases in section 2.2.

  1. Figure 4b: is it for area bonding or the whole bonding? Please include a picture for the third condition.

> Figure 4b shows the whole bonding. We added the comment in Figure 4b.

  1. Figure 6: Why not include type 5 and type 3 here?

> To prevent confusion and show the results concisely, the only images of type 1,2,4 and 6 were used. The effect on initial inclination was described through comparison between type 1,2 and type 4,6, and the washer effect was shown through type 4.

Reviewer 3 Report

Dear authors

Although the reserach work has potential industrial applications but the manuscript requires to be rewrite

I recommend the acceptance of manuscript after major revision acoording to the comments below

Page 1

Line 31 and 32

In introduction part very first two lines don’t are meaningless as nothing is clear for what type of structural parts the authors are talking about

Previously, most structural parts were composed of metals. However, presently, fiber-reinforced composites are used because of their high strength and light weight [1,2].

Same with line 33

Since two or more materials are used in one structure for various purposes

One structure of what?? Any machinery any tool, nothing is clear

Line 33, 34

research on 33 bonding of dissimilar materials such as carbon fiber-reinforced plastics (CFRPs) with steel 34 and Al has garnered increasing interest [3,4].

For what type of applications?

Before the below lines:

Bonding methods of dissimilar materials are divided into mechanical joining and chemical bonding. Research on mechanical joining is roughly divided into two categories.

It should be clearly mentioned that what is the requirement of bonding of dissimilar materials

So I suggest the author to take the assistance of some efficient person to rewrite the first paragraph of the article that clearly mentioned the meaning, gap, requirement of the current research

Page 2 line 46

Several studies have investigated the joint failure based on various factors such as the number of bolts [15].

How no of bolts can results in the joint failure (explanation required)

Page 2 line 73,74

Applications of chemical bonding have increased, especially in the automotive sector [34,35], as the strength of structural adhesives has increased.

Should be rewrite more clearly

In conclusion, Although the research work seems good but the language of the manuscript is not clear

Words like LSS, CFRP are the abbreviations, full form should be given at the place where it has been mentioned first time in the script .

Experiment

Chemical name of epoxy and hardener should be mentioned

Chemical structure of epoxy is required

Structural relationship with adhesion should be explained as mechanism

Result discussion should also be slightly modified in accordance to the point mentioned above
