The authors presented an interesting study on the deformation characteristics of crushed gangue under different water content conditions.  The research addressed the question of water conditions influence on crushed gangue under confined compaction tests. The authors analysed the compaction deformation characteristics of the gangue samples and the particle crushing characteristics before and after compaction, and obtained the influence law of water content in crushed gangue on axial strain and the changing rule between particle crushing and compaction deformation.

the topic is original and it addresses the possibility of using crushed gangue in road engineering (via the study of water conditions influence on the crushed gangue). The obtained curves showing the influence of water content on crushed gangue under confining pressure are interesting for use as well was the relationship curves between relative crushing rate and axial strain.

The authors followed specific protocols in their experimental work and they seem to be accurate. the conclusions are in concordance with the addressed question, and the references are relevant to the subject.

The article is well structured and the experimental results clearly shown with arguments in the discussion. I have very few remarks on the work.

- in figure 5 the dots meant to represent the test data are not clearly visible in the curve (unless overwritten by the fitting curves).

- page 11- line 323 to 326 : the sentence is difficult to clearly understand ("The distance between each curve...etc). I think it needs to be rewritten in a more simple way.

General Comments: In this study, the authors studied the mechanical properties of the crushed gangue at different conditions. The work is interesting however there are few minor issues leading my conclusion to Minor Revisions.

Comment 1: The literature review section should be improved. More recent studies can be included in the review.

Comment 2: Manuscript can be checked for the minor grammatical errors.

Comment 3: More recent references can be added in the reference section.
