Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

Dear Authors,

The work is important but needs these improvements

1. Please provide information about any case study for sugar content increase in some other country/countries with citation.

2. Add references to the 2nd and 3rd paragraphs of the introduction.

3. After the text as "Industrial characteristics include sugarcane sucrose content, juice sugar content, fiber 174

content and gravity purity were determined with reference to a previous report [12]", providing more details about data collection.

Reviewer 2 Report

I read with interest the manuscript entitled “Improvement of sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) varieties contributed significantly to sucrose in China’. The manuscript had agronomic value and bellow some comments that may improve its values for the scientific community and public.

The title given is not clear as doesn’t say if contributed for higher levels, lower levels, concentration, etc. need to be specific.

In introduction its worth mentioning the value of sugarcane as an energy crop and its value for current agricultural and climate challenges. The knowing of the contribution of the breeding program in energetic solutions its key for energy sustainability, including agriculture.

Include all references to software’s mentioned in the manuscript and add them in the references portion.

Authors must avoid self-plagiarism and copy-paste – table 1 of this manuscript is a copy-paste of table 1 of their manuscript in Agronomy 2022, 12, 1211. Please modify it.

Please provide a cluster analysis for the traits You studied in this study along with a combined cluster analysis of agronomic data obtained in this paper together with Your previous published paper Agronomy 2022, 12, 1211. The actual details can go as supplementary, but results should be included in the discussion. Good to mention the general value for these two analyses for sugarcane breeding programs. This would give a great boost in the importance of Your paper.
