Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

1. Lack of comparable data with normal cables comparable to XLPE. It is urgent to supplement data on dielectric and loss characteristics as well as SEM images.

2. Concise and clear explanations based on supplementary data are required.

3. Time of use is also important, but I think that analysis according to the amount of XLPE added can express the effect of additives more accurately.

 General Overview

Authors of this manuscript have presented a study Influence of Thermal Aging on Dielectric and Breakdown  Properties of High Voltage Cable Insulation Layer. The findings of the study has good guiding significance for the safe operation and condition assessment of high-voltage cables. The manuscript is well written, However, there are some flaws, it needs some more efforts to improve it further. Reviewer recommend major revision of this manuscript and publishing it only after improvement of the current version are made based on the following comments.

Comments

1-      In the introduction section please include research gap and novelty of the work

2-      The introduction part need some more studies to be cited as present form is very simple

3-      Give the applications and challenges in practical implementation of your study

4-      Please consider presenting the methodology applied in this work through a flowchart; it will be much easier to understand from the readers.

5-      Please include separate discussion part in the manuscript

6-      Please include the limitation and future recommendation of the study in the conclusion section.

Reviewer 3 Report

The paper presents the study results of the impact of thermal aging on dielectric properties of high voltage cable insulation. Authors investigated the more popular type of insulation, means XLPE insulation. They made microstructure analysis of XLPE. Then, authors measured the impact of mentioned aging on main dielectric parameters, such as breakdown voltage, permittivity, tan(delta).

Dear author, thank you very much for interesting paper about the impact of thermal aging on dielectric properties of high voltage cable insulation. It is important job, because thermal aging is one of the more dangerous parameter which decreases lifetime of power cables. I put some comments and questions.

Comments:

1. Some comments to title. I think, that “dielectric” and “breakdown” properties mean the same. One of the dielectric properties is breakdown voltage. So, I would suggest to reduce the title and cut word “breakdown”: “Influence of Thermal Aging on Dielectric and Breakdown Properties of High Voltage Cable Insulation Layer”

2. Introduction chapter is well organized. Anyway, I would add some information what is a source of thermal aging in case of cable.

3. Sample Preparation … chapter is also good organized, but I think some pictures of sample are missed.

4. Fig.1. I agree with authors, that there are some differences between (a) and (b-d). but I cannot see a difference between (b, c) and (d) of Fig.1. If authors see some differences, please explain it in details.

5. Fig.3. – Probability of breakdown voltage is presented in case of pulse voltage, not AC voltage. Please add information what kind of voltage was used in the investigation: pulse or AC. If pulse voltage, please inform us what pulse: 1.2/50 us or 250/2500 us.

6. Fig.4. – the impact of thermal aging on epsilon and dielectric losses is well known. So, please add some information what is effect of the increase of electrical permittivity and tan(delta) on the cable, or lifetime of the cable. I think, authors could research the effect on dielectric losses, which depend on electrical permittivity and tan(delta).

There is no talk of any optimization of additives. This part of the discussion is essential.
