1.  Coatings and surface modification are extremely different things. I think that it will be better to underline this aspect anyway.

2. The abstract is somewhat overloaded with information. It seems to me, that he abstract of the review differs from the abstract of the research work. The abstract of the review should not contain specific results of some researches and should be as brief as possible. Why, e.g., only Ni based electrodeposited coatings and Si doped diamond coatings are chosen for the abstract as effective protective materials and alloys? This authors’ choice should be also explained.

3.  The environment (pH and temperature) have a strong influence on tribocorrosion performance”. This is, of course, the case. And what about oxygen, carbon dioxide and other aggressive substances in air and solutions contacting with coatings? There are many publications devoted specifically to this issue.

4. The submitted manuscript could have been better structured if, after the first mention, any general statement should be referenced the readers to see appropriate works (for example, lines 654-655, 700-701, 858, and others).

Still, it is highly required as per copyright permission for each figure from different manuscripts, and citations alone do not reflect the requirement to fulfill the current demands. You need to mention where is to be reproduced and permission approval of each and every figure.

It is an important review paper on tribocorrosion of the coatings.  I just suggest the authors strengthened the scientific understanding of tribocorrosion. How did the synergy effect of tribo and corrosion deteriorate the coatings? What is evolution of oxide scale formed on coatings during tribocorrosion?

1. “This review of tribocorrosion of coatings has covered nearly 195 papers and reviews that have been published in the past 15 years which compares to only 37 published upto 2007 which were the subject of a previous review published in 2007.” Are the statistics data only about coatings technologies but not including surface modification technologies? Why not? The review title is “Coatings and surface modification of alloys for tribo-corrosion applications”. The relationship between coatings and surface modification should be determined in the present paper.

2. “Coating solutions being developed for tribocorrosion applications include a whole range of Ni based electrodeposited coatings, hard on tough coatings and high impedance coatings such as PECVD N and Si doped diamond.” Where “diamond” should be “DLC”.

3. “This review focuses on coating and surface engineering solutions for applications where tribocorrosion is present.” What is the relationship between coating and surface engineering? The relationship between coatings and surface engineering should be clarified in the present paper.

4. “see Error! Reference source not found.” There are many places shown in “Error! Reference source not found”. Please add the right references.

5. Fig.3(a) is confusing and incomplete, especially in surface treatment methods category, which should be redrawn or divided into two images.

6. Table 1, Table2, Table 3 and Table 5 are too complex. The present simple summary is not appropriate. For example, the columns for the country, author, and year could be removed, which are not the key information. The items and statements in these tables should be rearranged.

7.However, harness decreases with the further increasing concentration of W in DLC film because of breakage of CeC bonds by formation of WeC bonds after incorporation of W in DLC matrix.Where CeC, WeC should be C-C, W-C.

8.“…, and surface-treated Zirconium that results in an oxidized surface layer (OxZr).” Where OxZr should be ZrOx.

This paper was well prepared and organized from the point that it showed the review on the coatings and surface modification for tribo-corrosion application. But some part of the manuscript needs to be revised as follows.

1. Abstract is a little long and is to be shortened.

2. Introduction

  1) Figure 1; 'To determine ~~~" is to be deleted.

  2) There are many error paragraphs - "Error! Reference source not found". What are these in the whole manuscript?

  3) Figure 2's font is too small and I couldn't read them.

  4) Figure 3; Mechanical surface modification method MUST be added. That is, the literature survey on waterjet peening, ultrasonic peening, and UNSM must be performed and described.

2. Line 345; Check the superscript or subscript in the whole manuscript.

3. Tables and Figures were shown in the manuscirpt, but there were NO explanation about Tables and Figures. This MUST be revised.
