Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

I should complement the authors for pulling such a detailed review of literatures on data replication within a cloud environment. It's a lot of detailed information and categorization is nice. Would suggest a number of adjustments:

  1. This is a review paper, not a research paper. The tone and descriptions should be updated accordingly.
  2. Proper concepts of cloud computing, big data, and storage challenges should be presented at the beginning the review lay out should be defined by such challenge reviews.
  3. Some important literatures are missing. Authors can google "Big data and cloud computing challenges" to identify more, especially those published in the past 5 or 3 years. Many references are beyond 5 years.
  4. The tables are missy and the paper format has some problems which made it hard to understand. More figures can be used to stated the categorization and heavily research directions vs. those needs more attention.
  5. Application categories many times influence or decide which storage strategy to use. The paper doesn't have this.
  6. The most important contribution is what needs further research in light of future development of the domain and relevant science fields. This part is not emphasized.

Review Report 2

-Authors should elaborate also on the secure machine learning application in the cloud replication strategies problem.

As our paper focus is more on target-based replication, we have not touched application categorization part much, but now we had added the category of application along with its example under

Section 3.2. “Other distributed architecture-based replication strategies”. in the form of a paragraph.

Machine learning Application details are now added under section 3.3” Cloud Computing replication strategies”.

Beside this some of the reference has been added in section 1 related to concern applications

- Open research issues (long term vision on future research challenges) are needed.

In our previous submitted version, we had already discussed the future research related sections under

Section7. Least addressed target objective of target-oriented replication strategies in Clouds, their Challenges, Issues and Future Research directions.

We had further categorized the further research of each individual Least addressed target objective of target-oriented replication strategies in Clouds In the form of:

7.1. Scalability: Challenges and Issues

(Future Research Directions for Scalability)

7.2, Elasticity: Challenges and Issues

(Future Research Directions for Elasticity)

7.3. Consistency: Challenges and Issues

(Future Research Directions for Consistency)

7.4 Cost: Challenges and Issues

(Future Research Directions for Cost)

We had also added the related new diagrams @

Section 6.1.4 and 7.4, which also contains the same pictorial view of issues and future direction in the form of diagrams.

-Important references are missing and should be added

All of your suggested references are added now@ Section 3.3

Machine learning Application details are now added under section 3.3” Cloud Computing replication strategies”, which also include all of the suggested reference as mentioned in this comment.

In total, we added now 33 references in our update version.

Reviewer 2 Report

This paper provides a quantitative analysis and performance evaluation of target-oriented replication strategies based on target objectives. In this paper, authors try to find out which target objective is most addressed, which are average addressed, and which are least addressed in target-oriented  replication strategies. The paper also includes a detailed discussion about the challenges, issues, and future research directions.

Revision:

-Authors should elaborate also on the secure machine learning application in the cloud replication strategies problem.

- Open research issues (long term vision on future research challenges) are needed.

-Important references are missing and should be added:

Round 2

Reviewer 1 Report

All my concerns are answered, and suggest to accept with minor update on format, and double check language. The paper type should be carefully thought to broaden impact (a review paper normally has more citations).

The following paper maybe worth referring as pointing future applicaiton directions of big data & relevant challenges.

Yang, C., Clarke, K., Shekhar, S. and Tao, C.V., 2020. Big Spatiotemporal Data Analytics: A research and innovation frontier. International Journal of Geographical Information Science, 34, 1075-1088.
