Addressing Emotional and Behavioral Symptoms in Young Children: The Potential of Non-Therapeutic Play and Art
Abstract
:1. Introduction
1.1. Play as a Tool for Overcoming Emotional and Behavioral Symptoms
1.2. Art as a Tool for Overcoming Emotional and Behavioral Symptoms
1.3. Research Problem
- Pretend play and project activity will reduce emotional and behavioral symptoms in young children. This assumption was put forward because these non-therapeutic activities are similar in their mechanisms of influence on psychological processes to play and art therapy, respectively.
- Pretend play with an adult will be more effective in reducing anxiety and withdrawal, anger and aggressive behavior, and developing children’s social competence than playing without an adult. The assumption is based on the idea of the adult role for the child’s mental development in play as a carrier of cultural means and forms [27,48].
- Pretend play with an adult will be more effective in reducing anxiety and withdrawal, anger and aggressive behavior, and developing children’s social competence than project activity because play is the leading and most developmental activity in preschool age [26].
