Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

This is a well written paper.  I think it is important as it identifies the transition from d-exponent to MSE for pore pressure analysis.

Author Response

Sincerely thanks for your dedication.

Reviewer 2 Report

The article is about pore pressure detection while drilling based on mechanical specific energy. In general, the article is suitable for publication, but requires corrections first.

From the scientific point of view, the article presents the average scientific level. After taking into account the corrections presented for the authors, it is suitable for publication in the journal Processes

The paper should be improved namely in some identified aspects:

 - the authors should have some extra effort to make the description more easily understandable, more clear to all the readers and more simple to read as the subject seems a kind of too “complicated”.

- figures are not clear enough (especially descriptions).

- although the English is OK, the text needs to be simplified.

- the achievements presented in the article should be compared more closely with examples from other countries. The article is too review-and-case only.

- there should be more references to existing scientific achievements in the article, because the literature review omits the basic achievements in recent years (examples of achievements were published, among others, in the journal Applied Sciences, Sustainability).

Paper contains copies mainly from a thesis " The Pore Pressure, Bulk Density and Lithology Prediction" by Olalere Sunday Oloruntobi

Due to low originality I suggest to reject paper.

Dear Authors

Scientific comments

There is no fluidity and pedagogy in 1. Introduction and 2. Theory (you should better develop the methodology and equations used)

Items 1. Introduction and 2. Theory seem to be continuity of each other. You should also consider using the units in the International System.

Line 25 and others when referring to … Pore pressure is the pressure of the fluid within the pores of the rock in the formation … should be better explained, as this concept is associated with soils.

Line 288 and 289 … technique in deep and complicated lith- 288 logical formations, take well L and well M in a region in western Sichuan as the case 289 … e.g., define in depth the geology and lithological variations that can be superimposed on the figure 3 and 4.

On line 289 you write… well L and well … and always use the term well. Is it right or should it be another word like drill hole? Such terminology is not understood.

…Combining the torque and rotary speed of the rotary 327 table, the total torque and total rotary speed were calculated separately, as plotted in the 328 Fig. 3. … Must consider the text before the figure.

Figures 3 and 4 should be separated by a), b) and c) e.g. Figure 3. Drilling parameters under compound drilling for well M: a)…; b)…; c) and describe them on the text before.

You write …Leikoupo Formation is dominated by clastic rocks such as 292 mud, shale, and sandstone, while limestone and dolomite gradually become the main li- 293 thology in the following strata…. This conclusion is pretentious, e.g. … In this paper, an MSE-based drilling parameter method is proposed and validated 390 to provide reasonable pore pressure estimates in deep complex lithologic intervals… this should be demonstrated in a lithologic data log. You must improve and make the geological framework and the geological profile of the area under study in an independent item or Figure.

Paper title: Research on Pore Pressure Detection while Drilling Based on Mechanical Specific Energy

The present manuscript describes MSE-based pore pressure detection method. Here is estimated the downhole parameters from surface measurements when reliable downhole measurements are not available.

A manuscript has a practical application and also provide important theoretical for the next studies.

The paper is well structured and can be accepted for publication after providing the corrections mentioned below.

Point 1. Keywords need to be modified. Please use words not combinations of words or phrases.

Point 2. Lines 136-137. You should delete “Pinto and Lima, 2016; Wei et al., 2016; Zhou et al., 2017; Hassan et al., 2020; Mazen et al., 2021; Nystad et al., 2021; Yu et al., 2021”.

Point 3. Figure 1. Please add description of symbols after the title of the figure, not after formula 23 only.

Point 4. Why do not use SI units. “Metre” instead of “ft” in depth.

Point 5. Figure 3. Add description (a), (b), and (c) after title of the figure 3, 4, 5

Point 6. It will be great if the authors show some description in context – Why it is important to conduct this study? And of course, an in-deep literature review is required.

Point 7. What about pore pressure value in the water-saturated mine rock?

1). Consider reference Shapoval, V., Shashenko, O., Hapieiev, S., Khalymendyk, O., & Andrieiev, V. (2020). Stability assessment of the slopes and side-hills with account of the excess pressure in the pore liquid. Mining of Mineral Deposits, 14(1), 91-99. https://doi.org/10.33271/mining14.01.091

Point 8. Also please consider enhancing your literature review by references:

2). Bazaluk, O., Velychkovych, A., Ropyak, L., Pashechko, M., Pryhorovska, T., & Lozynskyi, V. (2021). Influence of Heavy Weight Drill Pipe Material and Drill Bit Manufacturing Errors on Stress State of Steel Blades. Energies, 14(14), 4198. https://doi.org/10.3390/en14144198

3). Yassien, M.A., Sayed, M.A., Boghdady, G.Y., Ali, M.A.M., & Mohamed, A.S. (2020). Experimental research into the effect of some operation factors and rock properties on the rate of penetration. Mining of Mineral Deposits, 14(1), 36-43. https://doi.org/10.33271/mining14.01.036

Point 9. The novelty of the research must be highlighted in the Abstract and Conclusions.

Point 10. In general, I must admit that a very good study was performed.
