A Critical Evaluation of Recent Studies on Packed-Bed Bioreactors for Solid-State Fermentation
Round 1
Reviewer 1 Report
Comments
In this review paper, recent studies in packed-bed bioreactors for solid-state fermentation is summarized, including traditional designs, novel features, and mathematical modeling. The subject is important and is consistent with the scope of Processes. The data and corresponding discussion reflect that the objective of this study was successfully met. In this regard, I would recommend acceptance subject to major revision as the following comments are addressed:
Major Essential Revisions
1. In the section of 2. Traditional designs for packed-bed bioreactors, the type and components of lignocellulosic substrate is critical for operating packed-bed bioreactor, which is missed. Please add related data and discuss.
2. In the section of packed-bed bioreactors with novel features, some figures or process schemes should be added and discussed.
3. In the section of 4. mathematical modeling of packed-bed bioreactors, the modeling process should be fully presented (formula, parameters, data, figures, etc.) and discussed, please revise.

Reviewer 2 Report
- the abstract should be revised to add some specific quantitative data/highlight results.
- Line 112, "large-scale 111 bioreactors are likely to be several meters in diameter." please provide specific example
- table 1 it will be better if authors add working volume and head space volume of each study
- line 173-174 why, please explain the mechanism
- 235 please explain briefly about the "perfect" control
- 251 what is saturated air, please briefly explain
- line 254 please revise this sentence to be more clear content
- 279-281 please discuss more about these papers to ref no 13, how they are different
- 377, please briefly explain how to mix and what's the frequency
- 419, with T40cm < T20cm < T80cm < T60cm. please explain the reason for this trend
- 421 with T46cm < T0cm < T69cm < T23cm, also please explain this trend
- 524 they can be ex-523 tracted by adding the extracting fluid to the bioreactor, please give some examples
