The authors analyzed six strains of four different genera for the single cell oil production in media with commercial-type xylose and under nitrogen limited conditions in shake-flask cultures. Two strains of Rhodosporidium toruloides showed the best values and were further tested by growth in commercial type xylose with different concentrations of lignosulphonates during batch experiments. One strain was also tested in fed-batch fermentation. The lipid profile of the two strains was analyzed and considered with potential to be used for some Man uses.

The document is well written and clear and represents more data for a specific group of strains.

Minor comments

1.     According to the taxonomic rules, two different genera, in the same document, could not have the same abbreviation. C. oleophila and C. curvatus are used for Candida oleophila and Cryptococcus curvatus. There are no specific rules to abbreviate the genus name, use two or three letters.

2.     Sometimes incorrect use of – or no space between the value and the unit (ex. 250-mL, 3-L, 24-h, 5M NaOH, 2M NaOH).

3.     Line 192 - Whatman filter paper nº?

4.     Table 1, legend – Instead of IPs it is used Ips

5.     Line 270 - “0.30-0.37% w/w (Table 2).” However, in Table 2 the maximum value is 0.36%

6.     Table 2 – Correct SDM to DSM and IPS to IPs

7.     Lines 345, 348 – Some taxonomic changes were recently applied to this group of fungi. The word zygomycetes can still be used but without the italic format and no capital z.

8.     Reference 10 – Apply the italic format to the genus name.

9.     Reference 56 – Correct the plant name Cassia Fistula L. to Cassia fistula L.

Michou and colleagues in their original research article compared six yeast strains in terms of microbial lipid production in xylose-based media mimicking lignocellulosic wastewater streams. The manuscript is well-written and the research is well-planned and conducted. Moreover, the introduction provides sufficient background and I enjoy also the presented aim of the study. In my humble opinion, the manuscript needs only minor revision.

The presented abstract is a bit too long. According to the Instruction for authors, the abstract should be no longer than 200 words.

The citation style should be changed. Each number should be provided in the brackets [1], [2-5], instead of superscripts.

GC program for FAME analysis should be provided.

The captions for Figures 1. and 2. should be corrected.
