As a branch of computer science, artificial intelligence (AI) attempts to understand the essence of intelligence, and produce new kinds of intelligent machines that can respond in a similar way to human intelligence, with broad research areas of machine and deep learning, data science, reinforcement learning, data mining, knowledge discovery, knowledge reasoning, speech recognition, natural language processing, language recognition, image recognition, computer vision, planning, robotics, gaming, and so on. Due to the recent breakthrough of deep learning in the AI field, the AI is the hottest topic in virtually all areas of research. People’s expectations for AI are very high, because of a series of recent eye-catching events about AI. For example, AI beat the former human champion of the game of Go, while people had believed that it would take decades for such a thing would happen. AI won against humans in a popular quiz show. AI reached dermatologists’ level of performance in the diagnosis of skin cancer. Consequently, it is said that AI will instigate the fourth industrial revolution. We expect and encourage researchers to participate in this historical era of AI. People wonder when AI will exceed human intelligence, but this would be dependent on each AI researcher. We are soliciting high-quality AI research papers that will make such a thing happen, and impact on science, engineering, and our society.
Despite a long history of the AI field in the twenty and twenty-first centuries, there are a lot of open problems that need to be solved. AI is a rapidly growing, promising area of research that is reaching its prime. AI has affected our lives, and is increasingly penetrating the human perception and lifestyle of our modern world and future, such as the AI applications in automotive, medical diagnosis, healthcare, finance, robotics, industry, military, autonomous systems, cyber security, communications, science, etc.
In the future, the expanding application field of AI will make human society involved in each aspect of the technological products brought by AI, and human capabilities will be enhanced during the process of AI simulating the information of human consciousness and thinking. To achieve this future, we need to globally disseminate our cutting-edge research results at a fast speed, and this AI journal (ISSN 2673-2688, https://www.mdpi.com/journal/ai) aims to help us reach this goal.
As an international and interdisciplinary scholarly open access journal, AI publishes original research articles, reviews, and communications, that offer substantially new insights into any field of study that involves AI theory, techniques, and applications. This journal aspires to provide a venue to support constructive communications across different related cross areas. Occasionally, special issues on topics of high interest will be organized, receiving more exposure to readers by being presented alongside relevant articles. We welcome your suggestions for special issues and appropriate guest editors. We have an outstanding editorial board of well known researchers and authorities to help us maintain the highest standards of peer-review and scientific quality, and to understand current and future trends in AI.
Since 2018, the publisher MDPI has become the largest open access publisher of articles in DOAJ and the fifth largest publisher of scholarly journals in 2019 [1], in addition to having a large number of verified review reports on the Publons platform [2]. Open access journals can be viewed freely by anyone globally, and have prestigious reputations with a fast review cycle. Accepted articles in the journal will be immediately published online. We encourage authors to publish their research results in as much detail as is necessary, spreading information to the widest audience possible. Of course, we would like to hear from our authors, reviewers, and all academic scientists in this area, to maintain this fast and rigorous peer review, as well as to improve it.
We look forward to hearing all about the cutting-edge research going on across the world, and sincerely wish that the authors enjoy publishing with us!
