Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), utilizing their sensor nodes, are able to sense ambient conditions in areas of interest of almost any kind and process and transmit the related data to the end users. This is why WSNs support a continuously increasing range of applications.
However, the operation of WSNs is obstructed not only because of the energy, memory and processing constraints of their sensor nodes, but also the inherent limitations of wireless communications, regarding capacity of communication channels, power and speed of transmission, and susceptibility to interferences and intrusion. Thus, there are numerous challenges regarding the enhancement of WSNs’ operation.
At the same time, evolving scientific and technological progresses initiate corresponding research trends that can augment the operation of WSNs and trigger new applications of them.
The aim of this Special Issue is to host research articles related to the state of the art, standards, new research proposals, experimentations, implementations, case studies and relevant scientific innovations and research trends regarding algorithms and applications of WSNs.
Invited papers have to be original and neither published nor under review in any other conference or journal. Potential topics of this Special Issue include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Energy efficient routing in WSNs.
- Coverage maximization in WSNs.
- Energy sustainability in WSNs.
- Optimization algorithms for WSNs.
- Energy harvesting /energy transfer methods in WSNs.
- Data analytics in WSNs.
- Artificial Intelligence / Computational Intelligence for WSNs.
- Cloud computing, edge computing, and fog computing for WSNs.
- Sensing technologies and systems for wearables and implants.
- 5G communication networks and mobile networks for WSNs.
- Environmental applications of WSNs.
- Applications of WSNs in flora and fauna.
- Applications of WSNs in Industry 4.0.
- Applications of WSNs in healthcare.
- Military applications of WSNs.
- WSNs for smart home/smart cities.
Finally, we would like to thank our research fellow Georgios Siamantas for assisting us with this Special Issue.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Algorithms is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
