In recent years, the utilization of biochar, a carbon-rich material produced through the pyrolysis of organic matter, has garnered substantial attention due to its potential to revolutionize biodegradation processes across various domains. This Special Issue aims to explore the diverse applications of biochar in enhancing biodegradation by showcasing innovative research and insights at the intersection of environmental science, engineering, and sustainable practices.
Biochar, known for its exceptional porosity, large surface area, and unique physicochemical properties, presents a promising avenue for addressing contemporary challenges associated with biodegradation. From remediating contaminated soil and water to facilitating the breakdown of recalcitrant pollutants, biochar's multifaceted characteristics offer a versatile platform for accelerating biodegradation processes. This Special Issue will delve into the mechanisms underpinning biochar's interactions with organic compounds, microorganisms, and environmental matrices, shedding light on the fundamental principles guiding its application.

All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
