Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Personal protective equipment (PPE) is widely used in the workplace since it represents a cheap and easy way to protect workers. Despite its convenience, some negative aspects are often related to its use, such as discomfort, possible interference with other PPE, and difficulties in moving, operating, and communicating. Moreover, in some cases, its efficiency in terms of protecting workers is not always guaranteed. Antivibration gloves, for example, have limited efficacy in reducing vibration at low frequencies; moreover, their thickness and rigidity could increase the force applied by users, possibly negatively impacting the hand–arm system as well as reducing dexterity and the capability to safely control handled tools. Producers are committed to improving PPE in terms of both efficacy and wearability, researching new technologies, materials, and shapes. Active earing-plugs, for example, are gaining traction on the market for their capability to reduce noise in selected frequencies other than for adapting protection to external working conditions, avoiding isolating workers, and allowing better communication. This research topic aims to collect studies focusing on the properties of PPE in terms of efficacy, wearability, comfort, convenience, and ergonomics. We will consider studies involving measurements of performance, comparisons between different typologies of PPE, properties of materials, interactions between humans and PPE, and surveys regarding the wearability, discomfort, duration, and reliability of such equipment.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
