Dear Colleagues,
In the last few years, the field of epigenetics has significantly expanded due to the discovery of new high-throughput microarray-based miRNA profiling platforms such as next-generation sequencing (NGS) that allow genome-wide microRNA (miRNA) and mRNA expression analyses.
miRNAs are a class of short endogenous single-stranded non-coding RNAs that are 18–25 nucleotides in length and are able to post-transcriptionally repress gene expression by binding to the 3’untranslated region (UTR) of their target mRNAs.
They were first discovered in 1993 as a developmental regulator of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. Since then, miRNAs have been found in different body fluids, such as serum, plasma, urine, saliva and tissues, and several studies have reported their roles in a variety of biological processes and immune responses, including angiogenesis, drug resistance and tumorigenesis.
Computational biology has improved our understanding and characterization of miRNAs. Bioinformatics and Systems Biology approaches have provided tools and pipelines to facilitate the discovery of novel miRNA loci and isoforms, as well as the characterization of miRNAs regulated genes and signaling pathways.
The aim of this Special Issue is to provide a series of state-of-the-art manuscripts, including both original contributions and review articles, in order to reach a complete understanding of the role of Bioinformatics Applications of MicroRNAs in Cancer Research.

All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
