Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Autonomous systems, such as unmanned aerial vehicles, ground mobile robots, autonomous marine vehicles, etc., are gradually becoming more widely used across a wide range of real-world applications such as accompanying troops on the battlefield, disaster relief, exploration of hazardous remote areas, etc. Autonomous vehicles need intelligent path planning, and safe navigation is their key concern. Reducing computational time in terms of replanning the path is one of the major goals of path planning.

Navigation and path planning for autonomous vehicles are still challenging subjects for researchers due to the fact that path planning not only searches for optimum waypoints to reach the goal but also needs to ensure safe and reliable navigation in a dynamic environment. Autonomous vehicles need to detect the position and movement of the dynamic obstacles and also replan the path simultaneously according to the movement of the obstacles, whilst also avoiding static obstacles. Time and energy-efficient path planning of marine vehicles to navigate in stochastic dynamic marine environments is also crucial in terms of reducing the optimal cost.

The range of this vehicle's mission efficacy has significantly increased as a result of recent technological advancements. However, throughout the journey, they must deal with difficult issues including abrupt changes in the environment, data accumulation, resource allocation, etc. Hence, there is still a growing research interest to address the challenges in the field of navigation and path planning of autonomous systems.

Considering the interest in this theme, we are planning a Special Issue titled “Navigation and Path-Planning for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Ground Mobile Robots, and Marine Vehicles”, with the aim of reporting the most recent findings from researchers and professionals in the sector that contribute to addressing the challenges in this domain.
