Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Waste treatment is one of the most fundamental and important components of cities’ infrastructure. In order to establish sustainable cities, it is essential to smoothly collect the waste disposed from homes, factories, offices, etc., and to properly treat it, including recycling in an environmentally friendly manner. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have also set targets for reducing food loss (Goal 12 target 12.3) and marine debris (Goal 14 target 14.1) as goals regarding waste treatment. To achieve these goals, new technologies and knowledge for waste treatment plays a vital role. In recent years, technological innovations in the waste treatment field have included automation and labor-saving in waste treatment using Internet of Things (IoT) technologies. On the other hand, the COVID-19 pandemic may give us a transition of traditional waste management around the world. In addition, it is necessary to propose an ambitious waste treatment method that focuses on the post-COVID-19 context. Indeed, waste treatment requires challenging technologies and methods that contribute to waste management systems for establishing a sustainable society. This Special Issue entitled “New Challenges in Waste Treatment” aims to provide the latest insights into novel waste treatment technologies and waste management methods that contribute to establishing a sustainable society. All papers need to present original, previously unpublished work, and will be subject to the normal standards and peer-review processes of this journal.
