Prof. Andrew M. Nedd has worked as a professor of art history at the Savannah College of Art and Design since September 2001, specializing in Russian art of the late-imperial period. He has served as a Guest Editor for two Special Issues in Arts.

Prof. Nedd’s conference presentations include reading papers for the 2018 Visual and Cultural Exchange Across the Baltic Sea Region conference in Berlin, and for the SHERA (Society of Historians of Eastern European, Eurasian, and Russian Art and Architecture) panel dealing with Russian Orientalism that took place in 2019 at the CAA (College Art Association) conference in New York. Prof. Nedd received a Regional Scholar Exchange Program grant (RSEP—U.S. Department of State) and was a short-term residential fellow at the Kennan Institute of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. In the summer of 2016, he served as a Scholar-in-Residence at the Hillwood Estate, Museum and Garden in Washington, D. C.

The following is a short Q&A with Prof. Andrew M. Nedd, who shared his vision for the journal with us, as well as his views of the research area:

1. What appealed to you about the journal that made you want to take the role as its Editor-in-Chief?
Arts provides a venue for high-quality innovative scholarship dealing with the visual and performing arts, thanks to the efforts of the previous Editor-in-Chief, Dr. Michelle Facos. I have edited two Special Issues for the journal while serving on the Editorial Board of Arts, and was very grateful for these opportunities.

2. What is your vision for the journal?
While keeping up the high standards for scholarship that Arts has established, I do hope to expand the journal’s scope in certain fields. I have added film as a new subject area, with the goal of including a variety of approaches from the discipline of film or cinema studies. Additionally, I seek to expand the area of architecture with more attention on the history of the built environment. I see the need to bring in several Associate Editors to support this expansion.

3. What does the future of this field of research look like?
Predicting the future of any academic discipline is difficult, especially in the humanities. However, it is clear that the field continues to evolve around interdisciplinary approaches, and, clearly, globalization and decolonization are the most urgent developments of recent years. I’d like to see the journal feature scholarship that draws on the latest methodological developments.

4. What do you think of the development of open access research in the publishing field?
Over time, an increasing number of scholars have embraced this format, and it helps them to expand the dissemination of their work. The previous Editor-in-Chief succeeded in recruiting notable scholars of the visual arts to our journal, based on the high quality of the articles appearing in Arts. I hope to build on the past achievements in this avenue for our authors and Special Issue editors.

We wish our new Editor-in-Chief success and prosperity in both his research and the development of the journal. Further details regarding the Editorial Board can be found at the following link: https://www.mdpi.com/journal/arts/editors.
