Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

With the growth of industries and advancement in technologies, the demand for metals has simultaneously accelerated. This has resulted in a greater demand for mining and metallurgical activities, which are often associated with the generation of emissions and consumption of energy. As the world cannot be sustained without the use of metals, mining activities and metallurgical processes cannot be stopped. Efforts have been made to monitor and minimize the emissions caused by these essential industries. This Special Issue aims to present a collection of some of the latest studies in this field. These include, but are not limited to, the following areas:

  • Monitor and determination of the emissions in mining operations and metallurgical processes.
  • Policies and legislations used to control and manage air pollution caused by mining and metallurgical activities.
  • Application and development of alternative processes to replace old-fashioned operations.
  • The development of cleaner technologies for different steps of size reduction, activating minerals, and accelerating the chemical reactions in mineral processing and metallurgy.
  • Investigations about avoiding the formation of carbon dioxide and toxic fumes by introducing alternative processes.
  • Life cycle assessment of mining and metallurgical processes.
  • Capturing and fixing carbon dioxide based on novel processes, such as biological activities, to convert the emitted carbon to some added-value products (e.g., biofuel and methylene), or using carbon dioxide for carbonating minerals.
  • Developments in the utilization of novel fixing chemicals and catalysts to prevent the evaporation of dangerous fumes (e.g., halogenated gases, furans, and dioxin).
  • Developments in artificial intelligence for an improved performance of the operating systems and minimizing emissions.
  • Design and application of more efficient comminution techniques for a more efficient operation (high-voltage fragmentation, microwave, ultrasound, and softening pre-treatments).
  • Progress in mine detonation and advanced designs to minimize emissions and dusts.
  • Introduction of novel dust collectors and emission-management systems.
  • Valorizing the collected dusts in the emission-control systems.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Atmosphere is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
