Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Science and medicine are clear: children are biologically not the same as adults. Treatments must be tailored to the specific biology of the child. In many cases, the herbal medicine that derives from traditional medications is no exception. Available herbal medicines that stem from wide range of plant-based matter, take their active form from various parts of plants and organic substances, and are the oldest treatment forms for human ailments. Whether given as dietary supplements, extracts, teas, oil embrocation or injections, herbal medicines have been found to be effective as standalone treatments or as supplementary therapies and are often used to treat children. Yet herbal treatments for adults cannot be blanketly applied to children. Rigorous testing of these medications in children is necessary for knowing and understanding the mechanisms of herbal medicine and their specific impact on children. Increasingly, studies and research have targeted specific reactions in children treated with herbal remedies. At the same time, many gaps remain as to the safety and effectiveness of herbal remedies in children specifically.

Of particular interest are high-quality scientific studies evaluating commonly used traditional herbal medicines - especially from Latin America, or Africa, or the Middle East.

We are pleased to invite you to submit an article or review submission for a special issue of Biology, titled “Evaluation of Herbal Medications in Pediatrics” For this special issue, we focus on pediatric-specific biology of herbal remedies.

This Special Issue aims to give a systematic picture of the biology of herbal medicine in pediatrics based on available research.

In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but not limited to) the following:

  • the biology of herbal treatments in applied pediatric practice
  • clinical trials with herbal remedies and their biological processes
  • biology of herbal dietary supplements given to children
  • systematic case series highlighting biology
  • biological research into traditional herbal remedies in children
  • the biology of herbal treatments in international contexts
