Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
This Special Issue focuses on the critical topic of antimicrobial stewardship in the context of solid organ transplantation. It provides a comprehensive overview of the challenges and emerging strategies for managing infections in the era of multi-drug resistance in transplant recipients.
The Special Issue begins by highlighting the unique vulnerabilities of solid organ transplant patients to infectious complications, related to their underlying medical conditions, their immunosuppressed state and the use of antimicrobials during various stages of the transplantation process. It underscores the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance, which can compromise the effectiveness of traditional treatment approaches and lead to worse outcomes for these high-risk patients. This Special Issue delves into the complex interplay between transplant immunology, infectious disease dynamics and antimicrobial resistance.
Recognizing the importance of early and appropriate antimicrobial therapy, the Special Issue emphasizes the role of antimicrobial stewardship programs in solid organ transplantation. It examines evidence-based strategies for antimicrobial selection, dosing optimization and de-escalation, aimed at minimizing the development and spread of resistance while ensuring the effective management of infections.
The Special Issue also highlights the significance of diagnostic advancements in guiding antimicrobial decision-making for transplant recipients. It explores the potential of rapid diagnostic tests, molecular methods and predictive algorithms in identifying the causative pathogens and their resistance profiles, enabling tailored and targeted antimicrobial therapy.
Additionally, the Special Issue delves into the emerging therapeutic options for resistant infections in solid organ transplant patients. It discusses the use of novel antimicrobial agents, combination therapies and adjunctive interventions, such as immunomodulatory approaches, to combat multidrug-resistant infections.
Overall, this Special Issue serves as a valuable resource for transplant clinicians, infectious disease specialists and healthcare policymakers, providing a deeper understanding of the challenges and emerging solutions in the management of antimicrobial resistance in solid organ transplant recipients.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Biomedicines is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
