Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue explores the dynamic interaction between carbon black as a primary active material, coatings, and surfaces across various applications, from thermoelectrical devices to advanced paint formulations and sensory technologies. Carbon black, a versatile and highly conductive material, is renowned for its unique properties, which include a high electrical conductivity, thermal stability, and reinforcing capabilities. When integrated into various coatings, carbon black not only enhances the functional attributes of these materials but also creates new opportunities for innovative applications.

The characteristics of carbon black vary depending on the manufacturing process. Carbon black’s high surface area and porosity make it an excellent candidate for applications that require the effective absorption of gases, liquids, or radiation. Furthermore, the sensory applications of carbon black-infused coatings should be thoroughly explored. These are employed in a variety of smart materials and sensors, where carbon black’s electrical conductivity plays a crucial role in the development of responsive and interactive surfaces. Thermoelectric devices benefit significantly from the incorporation of carbon black due to its excellent electrical conductivity and thermal management properties. The research collected herein should focus on how different forms and concentrations of carbon black affect the performance and efficiency of thermoelectric materials, providing insights into the optimization of these systems for enhanced energy harvesting and thermal regulation. Paints and coatings are essential for both aesthetic and protective purposes, and the inclusion of carbon black can dramatically influence their properties. This Special Issue will address recent advancements in pigment technology in which carbon black is used to enhance the color intensity, UV resistance, and overall durability of coatings. Studies should highlight how carbon black contributes to the formulation of high-performance paints, offering enhanced longevity and environmental resistance. This Special Issue will also feature studies on how carbon black enhances the sensitivity and responsiveness of sensory coatings, leading to advancements in fields such as wearable technology, environmental monitoring, and smart surfaces.
